Blazers signing Matthews is official

We'll see, especially if he doesn't play much. And if (once) the new CBA kicks in, who knows how bad that contract could be?

It's bad this year, and gets better later. By the time the new CBA is in effect (after who knows how long in lockout), he's on the small end of his contract.

By the way, I'm not necessarily saying that Matthews will be bad/untradeable/etc. Just answering RamblinRod's question of why we as fans should care about contracts.

Its always valid concern, but we are only talking a couple million. And that is if we stay around the magical line. But I just don't see that happening with Batum and Greg coming up for raises.

In terms of money we actually have to pay yes, but the cap hit still increases each year.
YEAR ------ base salary ---- bonus ------- cap hit
2010-11 --- 4,626,581 --- 1,138,419 --- 5,765,000
2011-12 --- 4,996,707 --- 1,138,419 --- 6,135,126
2012-13 --- 5,366,834 --- 1,138,419 --- 6,505,253
2013-14 --- 5,736,960 --- 1,138,419 --- 6,875,379
2014-15 --- 6,107,087 --- 1,138,419 --- 7,245,506
We pay all of the bonus within the first week.

touche. It's basically irrelevant, since we have a rich owner, are over the cap (and only going further over), and have a rich owner. Might as well strap in or get off the bus now; we've got this group of blokes for a while. After this summer, this is pretty much the army we'll go to war with for the next five years.

Did I mention our rich owner? :D

I hear what you're saying, but we weren't really going to be a major player in free agency this year or in the near future for that matter. I think the only way we really get over the hump from here is by cashing in on some of our assests and pulling off a big trade.

I would like to conduct an interview with Rudy and see what he has to say about this signing. I am sure he is thrilled we have added another piece to the puzzle!

That happens to play his position.

Matthews' comments are a bit misleading in this article. He said he would of signed for less, yet right out of the gates his agent was asking for the Full MLE. It's kind of disappointing to hear him talk about Utah's FO as if they didn't make an effort to sign him, when in reality his agent wanted more than he was worth. So Utah told him to go get the Full MLE and they'd consider matching it.

Again with the "defense" meme.

Matthews' Drtg was 108 in the regular season, and 115 in the playoffs.

Cunningham's Drtg was 104 in the regular season, and 105 in the playoffs.

Plus, I find your "tweener" argument hilarious, since Matthews is a 6'5" tweener at SF.

Tell me again about his great defense though. I've put up stat after stat, and oddly, no one tries to counter them other than making ad hominem arguments toward me, and not my posts.

Why is that? :ghoti:

Wes Matthews had Fesenko and Carlos Boozer manning the paint against the 2 favorites of the West coming into the year, while Cunningham had this guy named Marcus Camby next to him.

Another point I want to throw out there for you Kobe/Melo debaters. Utah doesn't keep 1 guy on prime scorers the whole game actually. C.J. Miles saw equal time on defense against them, and he was the one that guarded Melo in the Denver series when he wasn't in foul trouble. Wes Matthews is actually a good man to man defender and provides energy.

The one flaw I see Matthews possibly having an issue in Portland is that he got a lot of easy baskets finishing on the break from great passing of Deron Williams. I just don't see him getting those kudo baskets in Portland, and he does have some trouble finishing I noticed. So playing in a more halfcourt oriented team, his defense should improve while I could see his finishing in the paint decrease.

Of course that doesn't mean the Jazz couldn't have came back with a lower offer and he might have signed. That's what it sound like he was saying from when I read it. They didn't even bother to make him a offer, but if they had he would have taken less than the mid level if it was resonable. Just my take on it and not misleading at all to me.

I love this signing. There were 8 starting SGs in the second round of the playoffs and he was one of them. In his rookie year after being undrafted! Welcome, Wesley!

So I wonder who we'll get for Rudy?

Lets try for Turiaf, NY likes Rudy, not sure if that's enough? or Bayless for Turiaf?

I still say we wait until this signing becomes official.

Bell could fail his physical, or the Jazz could trade someones salary for cap space.

With all due respect J Ray, are you saying you may know more about how the Jazz play defense then BGrantFan? I am not sure anyone does including Jerry Sloan. He has stats.

That is too much for Turiaf IMO since I think Camby will get a lot of minutes against bigger PF's and Dante will get the back up minutes against the PF's who play out on the perimeter. We are basically talking about a third string PF.

Was it a rape? I never saw the games since I was in Autralia at the time, however, I asked Jazz fans about his pla and unless they were being completley dishonest (doubt it), they said while Kobe still got his as expected, Matthews made life tough for Kobe. Sure it was rape. Then again, Kobe rapes anyone who is defending him.

With that said, I am going to cheer the kid on. I love the idea of two good perimeter defenders on this team.

No, it was not a rape. The Blazers are not the team with a rapist.

I think most of Cunninghams minutes came before Camby was traded to Portland. Camby played 23 games in Portland, and after that point, Cunningham played 22 games. of those 22 games, 14 of them were under 10 minutes in total time. Including 10 of those being 6 minutes or under.

So holy crap, did Camby make a huge impact on Cunninghams defense in those 8 games where Dante played...cept that 4 of those games (2/23 against the Nets, 2/24 against Toronto, 3/7 against Denver, and to end the season against Golden State) where he played more than 10 minutes Camby didn't play or left early. So that makes it 4 games where Cunningham got decent minutes and Camby's defense helped increase his defensive ratings.

Camby ate a lot of Cunninghams minutes.

There's no such thing as easy baskets in Portland. Or screens. Or more than 3 plays.

Utah tried to discuss a smaller 3 and 4 year deals but his agent wouldn't negotiate. He said they wanted the Full MLE, so KOC told him to go out and get it, then they'll consider matching.

I was comparing the playoff stats.....

I was on the fence about the deal before this.

Now I think it was a mistake.

So the Jazz said Bell is a done deal pending the physical, which won't happen till next week.

Looks like the Blazers will have to wait out the deadline date to make Matthews officail . . . monday I believe.

Physical is supposed to be done before Saturday so in case they need to make a decision they still have time.

I though I read that it was the next week, but I can't find it, so thanks for the update.

Couple interesting notes I did find:

From another board: Just to update on the Matthews situation....

Randy Rigby is on 1320kfan right now and he made it very clear that the Jazz have not made up their minds about re-signing Wesley Matthews. He said they are still looking at the situation from every aspect and that they have NOT made a final decision on him yet.

And from yahoo: Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor said Bell just needs to pass his physical and show his left wrist has recovered from surgery last year and Utah will gladly welcome back the gritty defender who can motivate his young teammates.

Maybe not a done deal yet?

Raja Bell isn't flying in until Monday for the physical and Utah already alerted Matthews they aren't matching.

Have they officially informed the NBA . . . does it work that way or do the Blazers have to wait for the time to expire (Tuesday?) or the Bell contract is official before they can officailly say wes is a Blazer?

What about Bell's surgically repaired wrist . . . do you see that being a potential issue?

Well they can't sign both, so it would seem kind of strange to say they've made an offer with part of their MLE for Bell, when they'd need the full mid-level to match Matthews (if they really haven't decided between the two).

I was just going by what I read and that was when they ask for the full MLE they said to go and get offers, but didn't come back with a alternative offer. Of course you being a Jazz fan I'm sure have read a lot more on the issue than I have.

Since Matthews is basically a Blazer, can he be sent to Summer League ASAP? His 12.3 PER needs some work in Nate's system this summer.

I was thinking that yesterday. It's too bad we didn't offer this before summer league so we could get his butt to Vegas
