Blazers & Tiago Splitter reached an agreement on a 4yr, $36 million offer sheet

CSNNW.com has learned that the Blazers and restricted free agent at the time, Tiago Splitter, reached an agreement on a four-year, $36 million offer sheet. However, when it became apparent that San Antonio would match, both sides agreed to not go through the three-day restricted free agency process.

There has been one more center this free agency that surprised me. Pek, there were no rumors of any teams going after him, then boom, a big old 50mil contract given by the wolves. Reading he tea leaves, I think there must have been a team who was going to offer a big contract, but like in the case of splitter, the team was told to move on, a deal had been made between Pek and the wolves. Which team was this? I think it was the Blazers. We already know with Hibbert last year and splitter this year the blazers made big pitches for centers but pulled away to allow the team and player to move forward together.

So I believe, plan A was Pek, Plan B was Splitter, plan C was Lopez et al

Pretty interesting scoop by CSNNW, actually. Answers those among Blazer fans who were surprised and/or disappointed we didn't pursue Splitter.

And also an interesting analysis/theory from GOD. If you're right that the Blazers pursued Pek, here's an interesting quirk to notice, though I'm not sure what to make of it:

-Hibbert courtship = most public. It was announced by the media on Day 1 of the moratorium that Hibbert would agree to a Blazer offer sheet. The "wondering" whether Indy would match all took place within the moratorium, and when it was lifted and the Pacers made their commitment clear, the Blazers backed out.

-Splitter courtship = medium. No media reported the Blazers' role until after the original team demonstrated their commitment and re-signed the player.

-Pek courtship (again, this is assuming your theory is right) = least public. As yet, no media has been able to report a link between the Blazers and Pek.

Even if the Pek theory is wrong, I wonder why the difference between the Hibbert and Splitter situations, if in both situations the Blazers and the player "reached an agreement on an offer sheet."

I think because there was no negotiation on Hibbert. We were offering the max possible. It was just a matter of if he wanted Portland or not (and he did).

Splitter was never going to be offered the max. I could see us going to him July 1 and saying we'd offer 3/21 or something, followed by a counteroffer, followed by us saying "we'll go 4/36 and that's it". Then his agent taking it to SAS and them saying "yeah, we'd match that."

Pek? No idea.

I'm just glad we didn't sign Splitter or Pek. I'm not a huge fan of Lopez, but I think his dollar to impact ratio will be better than Splitter/Pek. And I REALLY grateful we didn't do something stupid like obtain Gortat or Jordan.
I think I'm of the mind that money should be spent on the backcourt/wings, and get value players in the front court...unless you're able to get a truly dominating C.

Since you have been posting the numbers how much the Blazers had in cap room, I was wondering if you knew how much the Blazers could have offered Pek had he been their primary target. If the amount the wolves agreed to is substantially more or less than what we could have offered, then I think my theory is shot. But, if the Blazers could have made an offer that is very close to what Pek got, then that's some decent circumstantial evidence to help build the case that Pek was plan A.

The most (using our 11.9M cap number) that we could've offered him was a 4/50.81M deal. To make it the most "toxic", it would've reduced it to 50.41M paid a 5.04M "signing bonus" upfront (limited to 10% vice 15% b/c he's RFA) , and then given him 25% of his base salary when he signed the deal (totaling a cash payment upon signing his deal of $7,706,779.24) and another 25% ($2,659,548.05) on October 1st.

It's all held in the same account, though. The cap space didn't vary from 6/30/13 to 7/1/13. What matters is the space available once the moratorium is over.

One day from July to June would not have mattered, though, in terms of cap space. It's all connected during the entire process.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Hedo, but I'm certainly not sure he would have been the right selection. I see Pek as being good next to a player like josh smith, not LMA
