If you check out the comment section from the story online at katu.com, you'd be surprised at the number of time travelers from the 1980's that are able to visit us, figure out message boards, the internet and how to comment.

I will say this, I agree with a few people that I wish sports teams would stay out of politics. I'm in favor of gay rights, I'm in favor of equal rights for everyone, but I really hate when celebrities or sports teams get involved.

Maybe they could endorse diesel engines in U.S. cars. Or, maybe pin strips in suits. Both have as much to do with basketball as same sex marriage.

Why? I don't really see what the problem with that is.

Because politics are so polarizing. People are very passionate about their beliefs, whether they're Republicans, Democrats, or whatever. I believe that sports should be for everyone regardless of their beliefs. When a team comes out for one issue or another, it marginalizes the beliefs of one group or another. I don't think that's a good idea. I think sports should be unifying. Maybe these two people don't agree outside of the Rose Garden, but for a few hours they are united in their love of the Blazers.

We should ban all tea baggers at blazer games

You are going to enjoy LGBT night at the Moda center or you're worse than Hitler.

Maybe the Blazers could endorse something important like winning at some point

I have found it silly for years that teams have an "official travel agency", an "official soft drink"... I get the same feeling about this.

Blazers should endorse Hillary 2016. Everyone else is just voting for the Koch Brothers.

I think it is funny the Blazers endorsed same sex marriage AFTER the Timbers did.

It's not politics. It's equal rights for all. That's like saying the MLB shouldn't have endorsed black players like Jackie Robinson because "it's a polarizing issue."

I said politics are polarizing, and it is politics, whether you like it or not. Bringing up MLB and Jackie Robinson has no bearing on this discussion at all. In that case, you were talking about a league allowing black athletes to participate. That directly impacted the sport. Gay marriage does not directly impact basketball, or soccer.

We aren't talking about gay athletes here. We aren't talking about basketball allowing gay athletes, which I don't think there's anything stopping gay men from playing basketball.

This is the Blazers publicly speaking out about gay marriage. Whether you agree or not, it's a political issue. It's polarizing America. There are people who believe that it goes against their religion. My point is that sports should be for everyone, regardless of their political or religious beliefs. By supporting one issue, or another, they turn their backs on one side of the fence.

How would you feel if the Blazers came out against gay marriage? Would you be able to support the team knowing that they don't support you?

I guess there's plenty of opportunity for him to pull a Kelly McGillis, but he doesn't seem ever to have been linked to it:

Allen has never married, but he has certainly had girlfriends. Although he was once romantically linked with Jerry Hall, who joined him on his yacht in the south of France shortly after her break-up from Mick Jagger in 1999, the dalliance — if there was one — was short-lived.
He also once dated tennis star Monica Seles. (?!?!)
The maudlin songs he wrote with titles such as Rhythm Of Hearts and Kingdom Of The Lonely for his rock band, Grown Men, are believed to have been his way of coping with the break-up many years ago.
Non-famous girlfriends report being treated rather less sensitively, several saying he unceremoniously dumped them without explanation and further contact.
In 1998, Allen ended up in court after Abbie Phillips, who he had employed to run his film and TV production company, Storyopolis, accused him of sexually assaulting her.
He denied the charge and the case was settled out of court, but not before her lawyer had accused him of mistreating four other women — 'developing crushes, lavishing gifts and vacations on, and then firing, married female employees'.
Women say he has nice, kind eyes and is 'sweet', even if he has the pallid complexion of someone who spends too much time on his computer.
Some report being terrified by his much fiercer sister, Jody, who appears to function as his gatekeeper. And well she might, given the size of his fortune.
Romance may be complicated, but Allen is on surer ground entertaining en masse.
His parties are the stuff of whispered conversations even among the top tier of Hollywood. 'No one entertains like that any more,' says one Hollywood producer.
'He is like a Medici prince, a grand seigneur, someone who entertains in the old style.'

Though, I didn't know this:
Allen attends almost every Trailblazers home game, memorising every statistic and barraging the manager with text messages during the game.In 2007, he reportedly offered £50 million for Southampton FC, but the deal — probably to the manager's everlasting relief — never happened.

A rare moment of lucidity for Eric! Making gay marriage "political" is itself a political act. So the Blazers and Timbers are being apolitical, or even anti-political. Just like the NFL wanting to help people sign up for Obamacare was apolitical, but they got scared off it by psycho rightwing nutjonbs.

What in the fuck does gay marriage have to do with the sport? Endorsing black players is entirely different than supporting same sex marriage

How is it apolitical when they come out in favor of one side of a debate? They used to be apolitical, but publicly coming out in favor of gay marriage makes them political. I'm not sure why you, or Eric, think that gay marriage is not a political issue. It's something that is being voted on, it's something that is being lobbied, it's something that the country is split over. Professional teams should not come out in favor of one side or the other, just like they should not speak out about abortion, or publicly support a candidate running for office.

Sports should be for everyone, regardless of who they vote for or what they believe.

Some people feel that equal rights should be for everyone regardless of their political or religious beliefs.

How would you feel if the Blazers came out against gay marriage? Would you be able to support the team knowing that they don't support you?

The same way I'd feel if they came out against straight marriage, or if they came out against interracial marriage, or any other stance that denied equal rights to law abiding citizens of this country. A pro gay marriage stance does not deny anyone's rights. An anti gay (or anti straight or anti interracial) marriage stance does.

Gay marriage is political in the same way that heliocentrism is religious: dickheads tried to make it so.
