Blazers TPE ($7,000,000)

Honestly, there aren't many. How many teams will pay (give you a draft pick) to give up a good player (a contributor)? The only time that would occur is if the team is fighting the Lux Tax. Boston (Kanter) and Philly (Scott) are really the only candidates.

Bjelica would be awesome. However, Portland would have to give the Kings something to get him. Bjelica's contract is non-guaranteed - so if the only motivation was to save money (or a roster spot), Kings would just cut him and walk away. If they are contemplating that, then a 2nd and a TPE might be enough value to get him from the Kings.
Yup. Speaking of Kings, Ilyasova, Parker, and Holmes fit as well.

If Olshey doesn’t use the TPE tomorrow, he’s not gonna use it imo.
This is it, I think. If we don't use it, we'll prolly waive all our exceptions and capholds to get under the cap. Better to use it now.

Just so Portland can clear $10.5M of cap space?

Having the $9.2M MLE with the BAE & TPE & the ability to resign our FA is much better option

exactly, that's why I want us to keep all our exceptions and use them. No point in getting under the cap.

nah, they just won’t use the tpe. No reason to not use all the other tools.

I am wondering if there is a trade here where POR can shore up its backup C and PF positions with SAC which I believe needs PG/guard depth/potential. Something were POR gets both Bjelica and Holmes (both expirings) for basically Anthony Simons and whatever is needed to make the trade work. There are a lot of guards available in FA so for me trading Simons is not a big deal. Thoughts?

The weird thing for me is that I'm not sure what the rush is with Simons. He's still extremely young. I never saw him as someone that could step in and contribute right away. If we're grooming him as a long term replacement for Dame at some point, just let the kid develop. I always expected GTJ to contribute quicker because he has a much clearer role on the team. He's a classic 3/D player. He grew up around the NBA. He understands what it takes to stick in the league. Simons is the definition of a project.

With that said, I'm fine with trading him because it seems like he has regressed and we really need players that can contribute now.

I would say the better comparison is back in the day James "Hollywood" Robsinson.

Damn both Woods and Robinson played for my team in Greece, Olympiacos. Especially Woods was a fan favourite.

My real focus is win now, Simons is a project but guys like Holmes/Bjelica would IMO really fit well and pretty much give us a very nice and deep front line and we'd still have the MLE and other smaller exceptions to add PG and wing depth

The big question on my mind is whether Simons will take a step forward. If he's ready he can be our backup shooting guard. But he hasn't shown it.

Agreed. He still needs to get a little stronger. I do think the shortened offseason might hurt a little.
And I definitely think playing him at the point has hurt his development at SG. I guess it was worth the shot to see if he could do it, but that seldom works out. He needs to concentrate on just one position. I think he and Trent would be a great combo off the bench if they played with a true veteran point guard.

Depends. If we could get a huge coup for him because a team out there feels he has huge upside than it might be worth looking at.

Simons is an undersized SG. He’ll never be a PG. I think he’ll have a productive NBA career eventually as a scorer. But I don’t see star qualities or anything. Maybe I’m wrong.

CJ had 3 years of college and it still took him like 3 years in the league to start producing. Simons would be a junior in college if I remember right.

My vote is for Derrick Rose. He's got 1 year left on his deal, so not a long term commitment. Gives Detroit more cap room to go after someone like VanVleet and then re-sign Woods.

The team seems to conduct itself like Dame is 25.
they just traded two draft picks for a 30 yr old two days ago.

Other teams have to be willing to give away players just for salary relief for us to be able to use the TPE. Without sufficient draft compensation, that's just not gonna happen given how few tams are in salary cap hell.

Meh..... middle tier draft picks aren't really some massive loss to the future.

Don't get me wrong, I like RoCo a lot, but this team needs more than role players at this point.

And you expect to get a star for a 7 mil TPE? Not sure what your gripe is here.

wait..... where did I say that?

think olshey is doing what he can with the pieces he has. And he has clearly shown he's building for NOW. your comment about acting like Dame is 25 has no merit.

They refuse to make the big dice roll. They're switching around seats on the Titanic. At the end of the day the flaw is either in Stotts or in the Dame/CJ pairing. That is the common denominators over the past six years.

I want big moves as much as the next guy, but that doesn't always work out either. Look at how many stars Houston has tried to put around Harden. They have as many conference finals appearances as we do with Dame.

I'm more focused on not making dumbass mistakes like giving 240 mil to scrubs in free agency or drafting busts in the lottery. This TPE, or draft picks, etc all do move us incrementally forward, however small that might be. And they're not blunders.

To be fair, they were a Chris Paul hamstring pull away from winning that series and possibly an NBA Championship. That is quite far away from Portland making the WCF Finals....although if you don't win a game, were you even really there?

And we didnt have nurk when we played GS while being up double digits in every game. Not gonna compare hypotheticals

No problem. Portland gets swept out of the playoffs a LOT no matter who they play.

I think now is the time to gamble a little bit. Lillard’s window is closing soon.

Throw the dice at someone meaningful. Covington is a step in the right direction.

If I was Neil I’d be on the phone with several teams about star quality players with CJ being the main piece

Exactly. The options at SG are numerous (Trent, Hood, Covington, Simons). Use CJ to bolster a weaker area.
