Trade Blazers trade for Robert Covington!!

Warriors were the best team of all time going small. LeBron's teams that won titles have basically always gone small with him surrounded by shooters. This years Lakers were bigger, but thats basically the only year LeBron has been part of a team that is bigger.

I'm really fine with getting another big forward, I think much more important than if Roco is at SF vs PF is if the other forward we get contributes on both ends of the court. During the DameCJ era we seem to only have offensive guys like Melo or defensive guys like Aminu; this gets exposed in the playoffs.

...and if we get players like the Warriors had (two of the greatest shooters in history, one which is a top level defender) or someone like LeBron, we could probably do that as well. My issue is Stotts keeps doing it with players it doesn't work with.

I am not sure who matches up with LeBron and AD. But we did have the necessary size last year...they were just hurt. Would Ariza and Collins and Little have helped against those two? Yes, but we still would have lost. Just like every other team in the league did.

I am all for getting superstars, but IMO smaller players who can flat out shoot are a better option than bigger players who can't.
But you do need a few players who can play D.

As Pinwheel is saying... thats probably more Neil's problem or injuries.

There wasn't some magic big lineup Stotts could've gone to but failed to try.... He played twin towers of Whiteside and Nurk extensively. He started Gabriel and played Melo at SF.

Now I guess your point might be the team should target a big forward as its next priority so RoCo can play SF... that could have advantages... I just think the two way talent of who we put at forward next to RoCo matters 10x more than if such player is a SF vs PF.

Are they just scrapping exit interviews for last years roster? Seems weird we don't know which players have been told to look elsewhere this season or that they'll be coming back..

So this trade is official now?

Lowe and Givony just mentioned that the Mavericks were close to getting Covington, but the 2021 first we relayed put us over the top.

So likely the Mavs were offering the 18th pick and one of their long term contracts. Or possibly 18th + Boban/Justin Jackson and a future second or something.

Well they got Josh Richardson so they are happy

I like the Covington trade although think it makes a bigger impact if he is playing mostly at SF. If he ends up at PF most of the time, I think it minimizes his impact. Stotts loves to go small....but what has that really every accomplished outside of one year at Dallas when he was the Asst. Coach?
Imma disagree here. Covington is better suited at PF. There are no Karl Malones any more. Plus it means no Melo. I think our primary lineup is going to be Trent and Covington at forward. It's super-small but feisty and it gives up threes at just about every position. They might not be our starters, but I think that's our balls-to-the-wall lineup.

I think you are right. Bigger more physical PF's can't guard the perimeter..so they don't last long on the floor. You still need one on the roster just in case a team goes big, but like you said not many Karl Malone types out there. Utah tried it with a Gobert /Favors lineup...but that did not work, so they ended up moving Favors to back up center most of the time.

I think for this year we try to get Millsap and start him at PF and Covington at SF, but then when Millsap goes out RoCo moves over to the 4. My guess is RoCo ends up finishing games at the 4....with Dame, CJ, Trent, and a center.

I still like the idea that if Detroit buys out Ariza, we pick him up with the MLE instead of Millsap and start Ariza and RoCo at the forward spots. Zach comes off the bench for bigger lineups, Gary will come off the bench (even though he should start over CJ) and "a center" how about Nurk who will be our second best player this season.

Also who the fuck is carl Malone, is that the Carl Sr. to Carl's Jr.?

We couldn't sign him after trading him away.

"No Re-Acquisitions — Once a team trades a player, it cannot reacquire that player during the same season. If the team trades a player between seasons, it cannot reacquire that player until the end of the next season. The only exceptions to these rules are if the player is waived and no other team claims the player."

So if Detroit buys Ariza out and nobody claims him at 12 million, we can definitely sign him.

On most nights, that is likely true. But when we play the Lakers and Trent/Covington have to guard James/Davis, I'm thinking we might be more than a bit outmatched. That is who we have to go through, so let's plan for that. Goodness knows, Stotts will go small every chance he gets anyhow.

While that is inaccurate, found clarification that we actually could sign him, because he was waived by the pistons, not the team we traded him to.

Aren't we supposed to be signing Millsap for that (not that he did much for the Nuggets against the Lakers)? I wish we'd've targeted Xavier Tillman for this reason.

Haven't waived him yet

I'd much rather have Covington + Ariza than Covington + Melo

I guess a pipedream is Covington + Jermai Grant + Ariza. But that sure would be interesting. I'm pretty ambivalent about Millsap, but he'd plug fairly well into Grant's position and make it less of a pipedram

I don't even know what pipe your smoking to get into that deep of a dream state. In this dream what is Ariza signing for?

I believe the dream is that the Pistons waive him and he takes a vet's minimum deal here. In other words: not likely.

Blazers could split the MLE giving Ariza part of it. There's also the BAE. 3.6M for Ariza might have a little bit of traction

True, but what makes you think that the Pistons are going to cut him loose? Have you read something to that effect?

I read somewhere that is what it was believed they would do. Who knows....they just practically gave away Kennard.

Edit: Never mind. I forgot that he still only has $1.8M guaranteed. Yeah, they'll probably dump him.
