Trade Blazers trade for Robert Covington!!

missed this last night as I wasn't online or watching any TV

I do think generically two 1st's is a substantial price. But, if this year's draft is as bad as people are saying, then half of the draft pick package is devalued. Depending on the protection of next year's pick, that value might be reduced as well

essentially, Covington = Ariza as far as fit and role on the Blazers. And last year, Portland was pretty good when Ariza was on the floor. Covington is probably a little better defensively, but he can be pretty inconsistent on offense. Mainly though, he is a two-way player and Portland has too few of those. When Covington is engaged in the offense and shooting well, he's a really good player. Maybe he can be more consistent in the Portland offense. We know Dame will try to keep him involved

Covington's timeline fits Dame's timeline better than Ariza. This will probably be a good trade for Portland. They paid a price, but they received good value. I doubt Covington will be good enough to significantly alter Portland's trajectory. That trajectory will always be shaky with CJ as a #2. But if somehow Portland can add another good player, the combo of Covington and playerX might push Portland close to contending. But playerX can't be Melo or ET....yuck

Slightly ominous reminder: guess who the last player was that Olshey traded a first for?

Blazer-favorite Arron Afflalo!

All right! Something to be excited about. Looks like I am late to the party. Isn't that the way it always is; lose interest because you think nothing is going to happen and then bang! Now can we pick up an extra second pick by tomorrow, or at least move up?

We streamed our reaction to it if you wanna watch (Fonz linked it) or you could come ask us on our 9PM stream tomorrow on our streaming channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/blazersupriselive). Would love to answer this on stream to be able to go fully in depth!
I watched your stream last night, but you guys were kind of overwhelmed so I didn't comment.

Covington is a great addition...

BUT DID HE REALLY HAVE TO TRADE OUR PICK THE DAY BEFORE THE DRAFT AFTER WE'D BEEN TALKING ABOUT THE DRAFT FOR OVER SIX FUCKING MONTHS????
You guys crack me up. This is going to be the worst draft in 30 years! Honestly!

I don't think we're getting much else other than maybe Milsap, who I don't consider a good player at this point. But if Milsap is your 7th or so guy you're doing pretty well, which should probably be where he fits.

I think the Blazers are going to roll the dice on Hood recovering, and Trent, Collins and Nurkic (who is only 26) continuing to improve. Is that enough to contend? Probably not. It gets us a decent shot at the WCF, which isn't bad.

Let's face it--unless Dame can convince another superstar to come play here, or somebody like Trent has a meteoric rise, we aren't likely to do better than that.

No, I don't block people who disagree with me. @JDC and I disagree all the time but I respect his opinion and enjoy having conversations about the game with him on stream.

I do, however, choose to not associate me with negative people that decide to trash me out of the blue and make up false narratives to try to do so. Yes, I'm talking about you, and the way you're acting right now is a perfect example. I have no idea why you're taking shots at me and Eric right now. It's pretty lame.
Eric doesn't block people who disagree with him. Try not to bring your back up into the conversation. Yes, I'm talking about you and only you.

Unless olshey trades for a pick
I was hoping one still might be included in this trade, but I see Houston doesn't have a 2020 2nd rounder this year. They do have a 2021 though. We don't have our own 2021 either. Not sure if we have much ammo to move up in the second round this year.

Is Covington our Buck Williams? Could he be the piece that transforms a middling first-round-exit squad into a contender, simply by virtue of providing an element that was missing previously?

Or does he better fit the Kersey mold, while the somewhat-maligned Paul Millsap might be more suited to providing the Buck effect?

Again, I don't block people for disagreeing with me. I block people who shit-talk me. Two completely different things. If you dont understand that, that's fine, because I'm not going to derail this thread with a petty argument.

I olshey going after scrubb in the 2nd but will he be there at 46. But I wouldn't move up in the 2nd just though. I would like land Tillie in the 2nd tomorrow night.

I see Covington as like Aminu. That sounds like faint praise, but it isn't. Aminu was great for us.

It's asking a lot for Covington to be like Buck or Kersey. Buck was an All-Star and the best player on his team before we acquired him.

I'll PM ya man. I got some questions for ya. Not trying to start anything. I agree. Lets enjoy the trade.

I remember as a kid thinking Buck Williams was an ancient old man when the Blazers traded for him.

He was 29. younger than Damian is right now.

I see Covington as more of a Kersey

I'm sure you are all on the edge of your seats, waiting to see what John Canzano has to say. Well, here it is:
"I like that the Blazers showed ambition. I’ve grown weary with a franchise that too often appears content to waste Lillard’s best years. Portland got the wing defender it has coveted for years. Covington will land somewhere around the No. 114 highest-paid player in the league (~$12 million next season). That’s a contract you can live with.

The Blazers gave up their first-round pick in 2020 (No. 16 overall) and a protected future first-round pick, per the report. That’s not cheap. But as a die-hard Blazers' fan colleague told me on Monday night, “Bargain shopping is for teams with time.”

The trade raised some eyebrows with executives from other NBA teams. One Western Conference suit saw the deal orchestrated by Portland general manager Neil Olshey and said, “They paid retail.” But maybe that’s what you do when you’re a chronic non-factor in free agency and you hear the sound of Damian Lillard’s biological clock ticking.

Canzano did Canzano in that column. "I kinda like it, but you know it cost something. It might be good. It might be bad. I would have roasted Olshey for not making a move, but I reserve the right to roast him for making THIS move if it doesn't work out."

Probably more this ^

RC will no doubt help against bigger wings that they struggled to guard last year.

Millsap would give us that wise old vet that would bring some intangibles. It is a shorter season but I still would not overuse him during the regular season if we were able to get him. Get the young legs like Little and hopefully Gabriel some time.

But I would feel good about the playoffs with that group. We would still need Zach to step up though at both C and PF

hehe, that guy is such a clown.

I'm worried that next year's pick may not be very heavily protected. If it was, Olshey would have made sure Woj put it out there, wouldn't he?
