I was under the impression that the number of Hotel rooms is not the issue, but it was the fact that their isn't one huge hotel big enough to house everyone. They don't want everyone spread out.

Yeah but a lot of the players complained about it at the time. I lived there at the time and there was alot of bitching by the players. It's not like they can go skiing during the season. I will be surprised if they pull it off.

Every new arena has been awarded one, except us and ours opened 18 years ago. It's well past time.

That may be the real reason but that is not the reason the NBA keeps telling reporters or the team:

"We'd love to find a way to get to Portland, but that continues to be the issue for Portland and many other ideal cities, and just a function of not enough hotel rooms," Silver said.

I suppose you could say he is paraphrasing and means not enough hotel rooms in one place but I don't think he is that lazy.
