I have a little different take on that
those were the years that OSU was a national power, at least as far as record and rating's. But they consistently failed, miserably, in the post season
1979 - (17-9) lost in NIT 1st round to Nevada, 62-61
1980 - (23-3) lost in NCAA 1st round to Southland, 81-77
1981 - (26-1) lost in NCAA 1st round to Kansas State, 50-48
1982 - (25-4) made it to 3rd round of NCAA, losing to Georgetown, 69-45
1983 - (19-10) made it to 3rd round of NIT before losing to Fresno State, 76-67
1984 - (22-6) lost in NCAA 1st round to West Virgina, 64-62
1985 - (21-8) lost in NCAA 1st round to Notre Dame, 79-70
1988 - (20-10) lost in NCAA 1st round to Louisville, 70-61
1989 - (22-7) lost in NCAA 1st round to Evansville, 94-90
1990- (22-6) lost in NCAA 1st round to Ball State, 54-53 (Jim Anderson)
the Beavers lost in the 1st round in 8 or the 10 years they made it to the post-season, and of the time, they were the favorites. There was a common denominator....just about every elimination game, the Beavers were in foul trouble. I think that's because the Ralph Miller teams played defense with their hands. They got steals and deflections, but they also were 'allowed', by Pac-10 officiating, to grab and hold all over the court. I saw it, but that was when Miller was the dean of Pac-10 coaching since Wooden had retired in the mid-70's
when they got into the tournament, officials were calling fouls on defensive plays the Beavers were used to being successful with. It took them out of their defense and left them on their heels
