The part that I don't understand is how nobody seems to holy politicians accountable. In Portland, the Chief of Police has historically reported directly to the Mayor. The Mayor is the boss. Vote that sucker out. Put someone in power that will actually wield some power with the cops.

They do elect black mayors and there are black police chiefs appointed. It still takes the feds to initiate investigations into racially oriented violence by the cops. It's not who's in charge, per se, it's the system of rules and rules of engagement are codified and need to be fixed. There's clearly a lot of resistance to fixing them.

The jury deadlocked on all 4 charges, there was a retrial. The judge doesn't get to vote.

Burden of proof is unanimous jury vote. It only takes one no to hang the jury.

In civil cases, it's a majority, not unanimous.

I think they're part of a much larger systematic way of mistreating people they take prisoner. The rough ride in the vans is common. In this case, the guy died. On others, they don't and we don't hear about it as much.

I'd agree. Which is why I am surprised they got off so to speak.
