Dominika Cibulkova made light work of qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko to reach the second round of the Diamond Games tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 victory Wednesday.
The sixth-seeded Cibulkova, who was playing in her first match since losing to Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, broke her opponent twice in the first three games to set the tone for the match.
Top-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada and second-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany lost in the second round of the Diamond Games on Thursday.
Bouchard double-faulted nine times in a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 defeat to Germany's Mona Barthel, while qualifier Francesca Schiavone -- a former French Open champion -- needed under one hour to beat Kerber 6-1, 6-1.
Third-seeded Andrea Petkovic of Germany advanced to the Diamond Games semifinals Friday after beating sixth-seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (2), 6-0 in a scrappy match featuring 11 breaks of serve.
