Bob Montgomery, songwriter, producer and childhood friend of Buddy Holly, dies at 77

Bob Montgomery, a songwriter and producer who wrote hits for pop and country artists from Buddy Holly to Eddy Arnold, died Dec. 4 in Lee’s Summit, Mo. He was 77.

The cause was Parkinson’s disease, publicist Greg Matusky said.

Bobby LaRoy Montgomery was born in Lampasas, Tex., on May 12, 1937, and spent his teen years in Lubbock, Tex. He initially teamed up with Holly as the rockabilly duo Buddy and Bob in the 1950s, but then focused on songwriting for Holly and the Crickets, co-writing “Heartbeat,” “Love’s Made a Fool of You” and “Wishing.”
