Bobby Jindal rewriting history through voucher schools

So it's Bobby Jindal and the voucher program's fault that a religious school is choosing to use a heavily-editorialized textbook?

Yes it is. He is defending the book, which over and over rationalizes all the evils in American history (KKK, extermination of Indians, you name it).

Bob Jones University is the think tank publishing this and similar books.

So the section about Hippies is actually accurate. I follow the link on the Yahoo! page to americablog.com and there is an awful lot of "stuff" about how the textbook got it wrong about the hippies.

"They were pacifists" LOL.

They marched on Chicago and incited bloody riots. They went to airports and threw baggies of feces and urine at soldiers returning from Vietnam.

Charles Manson and his gang were a pretty good example of a violent hippie cult.

So really, who is trying to rewrite some history in the process here?

The rest of the objectionable (I do object) is taken from textbooks used at private religious schools. The whole point of vouchers is that parents and students should have the choice where to go. I'd be interested in the facts they're not talking about, such as whether anyone is using vouchers to attend those schools, how many actually use the textbooks, etc. It could well be that the books in question are used at a very small number of schools attended by tens of students state-wide.

Manson was violent but not a Satanist. And "hippie" is a pretty loose term. I can assure you self-identified "hippies" had no love for Manson, they were self-proclaimed advocates of peace and love. And not Satanists.

Is it true that slaveowners were nice?
That the KKK was a force for good?
That dinosaurs and humans coexisted?

It's interesting how certain groups retaliate being called certain things, by calling those people who were polar opposites to them, that thing.

As in, Manson did not represent hippies, hippies were not violent, nor did they advocate violence or satanism.

But it's easy to say that, especially from a "voice of authority" (albeit, in this case on a website).

if you say something enough times, and loud enough, people start to believe it. The left does it, but the right excels in it. The way that they've rewritten history (unfavorable in their eyes) to make them out to be the victims, or that the bad things were all perpetrated by the left/hippies and the good things were perpetrated by the right/conservatives.

stuff like "hippies put flowers in the soldiers' guns?"

Say it enough times, depict it in movies, and people will think it's historically accurate.

As far as the religious schools teaching what they do, I don't agree with any of those things.

I don't at all think hippies were the perpetrators of many bad things. Hardly. I give them a lot of credit for advancing civil rights for black people and bringing attention to the democrat's war in Vietnam, advancement for women in society, and a whole lot more.

Interestingly, a lot of those hippies are now in government and in the highest offices (appointed), or are tenured college professors.

More fun www sites:

Mark Rudd was chairman of a chapter of the SDS and later became a compatriot of Bill Ayers in the Weather Underground, which set off bombs (according to WikiPedia, "conducted a campaign of bombings through the mid-1970s, including aiding the jailbreak and escape of Timothy Leary.")

Vietnam vets talk about their first hand experience being spit on and worse.

But yeah, it never happened.

Hippies used to be Libertarians who just wanted to be free to live their lives the way they chose. Now they're Fascists telling us they know what's best for us.

Hippies were left wing. They loved their communes so much they (still do) want the country to be one big one.

hmm pretty close here

cast a net and you would get a little of everything

a lot of kids waiting to go or just back from VN, a lot of things that I thought were important to begin with morphed to the ridiculous

started off going beyond the 50s status quo, demanding the freedom of expression, over time the anti war movement became more important...impeachment of Nixon a lot of kids felt was a victory by the people,in hindsight I realize that was never true..

was I a hippie? hmmm by any of todays standards I may have been..I know many of my peers were..they went on to communes, collage, cultish retreats or continued to live the life up to the days that the drugs would take them way in various ways..

I did the service, hitch around got some education, went to work...meh..

as an aside, this brings to mind a collage text that I have, its an 1860s history book that talks about the civil war as a modern event..Iwondr what twisted beliefs about my youth, people will have 100 years from now, if in such a short time the opinions expressed here are what is believed...

You are confusing many anti-hippie types with hippies, maybe because you like many people falsely equate anyone with longhair who takes drugs as hippies.

Peace, Love, and Goodwill to all. That's a hippie.

It happened, Short Pants. Very famous pictures.

It took great courage to stand against a group of trained killers who were ready to kill you. News reports would say that when it inevitably became a police riot ("incited bloody riots," as you put it) the National Guard would make a point of especially beating up the girls who had put flowers in their guns.

Photo op. I read about the incident. It happened once when a photographer was present. Good find.

I think I'll take the word of numerous returning vets about what was thrown at them.

No, it happened a few times, including girls flirting with silent soldiers as they inserted the flowers. Hippie guys liked to be flirted with, so the girls didn't know that warmongers get mad when you act sexually. You guys just waited till the cameras left to begin the beating. Photographers were at almost all demonstrations, not just one.

Interesting. More than half of the spitting seems to have been mostly when they returned from Vietnam to Oakland, every time a flight came in. Comments say MPs wore raincoats while moving the soldiers past airport demonstrators, so it was predictable. Returning soldiers weren't warned, and it was never in the media, probably to keep up the pro-war morale. I never saw this in the papers till years later. Sounds like it was kept secret. Well congratulate yourself. I no longer wonder whether it's an urban legend.

Now try to convert me to being in favor of that war. That will be much harder.

I don't call people gay, but in this conservative case, I do think that his nose was designed for something other than breathing or picking.

The only people who'd want you to favor that war would be LBJ sycophants. Maybe the JFK ones, since he got us into it.
