Brandon Roy: "Rudy Fernandez is a starting SG in this League"

Rudy with a more prominent role (starting) will explode wherever that may be. Does Rudy stay with a title contender or does he find a way out of Portland to start?

As long as we get a very good young PG in return I can live with a Rudy trade.

When (not if) he's traded, I hope it's to Sac.

Sacramento makes no sense for Portland.

Beno Udrih? No thanks.

I doubt it. Sacramento already filled their stubble quota with Caspi...

Anyway, why would Rudy want to spend time with these dorks :devilwink:

Anyway, I hope we never have to trade Rudy. We went through so many Spanish players - it would be a shame to get rid of the only one that would amount to anything of them...

I like Rudy too much to want to see him stuck on that sad sack franchise. Wait a year or two, Maris, for Sergio to be trade yet again. Really bad teams tend to cycle through lots of players (remember the Theo Ratliff Blazers?) so don't count on Sergio lingering long in Sactown.

Rudy will be traded eventually, and I'll be a fan of his where ever he goes. He's just too good to be stuck behind Roy. At some point a quality youngish PG is going to become available, and we'll pull the trigger on a deal that involves Rudy. I'm ok with that.

I totally disagree with Brandon on this one. Rudy's absolute best role in the NBA is as a 6th man to provide instant offense off the bench. He is our Vinnie Johnson/Manu Ginobili. Playing behind two future Hall of Fame guards in Detroit, Johnson still managed to have a nice career and was a vital piece of those back-to-back Pistons championship teams. During his years in Detroit, he averaged between 25 - 29 MPG - despite being "stuck" behind Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars. Given the fact that we don't have a future Hall of Fame PG on our roster - and we can also go with a 3-guard line-up with both Roy and Rudy on the court, I don't see why Rudy can't average almost 30 MPG.

If he goes elsewhere to become a starter, it will most likely be on a bad team. His defense simply isn't good enough to start at SG on a contender. He isn't strong enough to match up with the top SGs in the league (Kobe, D-Wade, Roy, etc.) on a nightly basis. They will drive on him and post him up all night. I hope Rudy realizes what a good situation he's in and doesn't start to think the grass is greener elsewhere. He has a chance to be an important part of something here in Portland. I would hope being part of that success i more important to him than starting on a crappy team elsewhere. Heck, Manu doesn't start for San Antonio, yet he's one of the most important players on his team. Rudy could play the same role here in Portland.

Roys had a nice day.

First he suggests blake should start over miller...

Then he pumps Rudys ego (which is already big) with this starting SG shit.

Whats next? Says Aldridge is getting low balled by KP or how about Przy deserves to start somewhere?

Why not change your screen-name to The Welcher?

Season hasn't started yet, so go away.

BTW, Joel already starts for this team, and it's obvious they're lowballing LaMarcus or he'd have signed by now.

Why don't you go the fuck away! Season hasn't even started and you've worn out what little welcome you had!

maris .. u and hcp should swap sergio pictures.

i bet hcp has some outlaw pictures too

thats funny hcp.... ive only posted a few times and you have responded every time. you sure you want me to go away?

then you could go back to your "im watching blazers replays on MY 60inch SONY TV instead of football" pointless info while praising every blazer and even the ones who arent here anymore. I know I cant wait for your next post.

I'd love it if Rudy could play more point guard. He has the passing ability to do it. A three guard rotation of Roy, Rudy and Miller would be sick.

He needs the handles and defense for it. The ball-handling skills are possible but unlikely. High-level ball-handling skills are pretty rare to acquire after a player reaches the NBA. Fernandez isn't that young a pup and I doubt he's ignored ball-handling to this point. He's probably close to maxed out in that respect.

I don't think he'll ever have a chance of being an adequate defender of point guards. He's too big. Someone with remarkable defensive instincts and skills might be able to overcome that (Batum, for example, might well be able to check point guards) but that doesn't describe Rudy.

Rudy has a few talents: catching and shooting, passing, and finishing. If he had high-level ball-handling skills, he could be a big-time star (as he can right now only finish plays that are created for him...he can't get through traffic with the ball, himself). Those skills lend themselves to being a versatile two-guard. I don't think he'll ever be able to play point guard for long stretches and be an asset.

That said, a three-guard rotation could still work while Miller is here and effective. As long as one of Miller or Roy is on the court, Rudy wouldn't have to be the point guard...though a Roy/Rudy backcourt would be problematic defensively. Unless the defensive schemes get creative and Batum is tasked to defend point guards in such situations, allowing Rudy and Roy to defend the 2 and 3 positions, respectively.

For comparison sake, Manu Ginobli has a career average of 27.7 min./per

To increase Rudy's playing time either he or Roy will have to spend more time at PG.

If your trying to get one of Roy or Rudy matched up on defense against a SF, why not just start Rudy and Roy at the wings? Then Miller and Blake would split all PG minutes. Batum could be the "Vinnie Johnson" backing up Rudy and Roy for 27mpg at the 2 and 3.

why do people seem to want a youngish point?
could someone explain?

Well we've already got an "oldish" point in Miller and a "middling" point in Blake and Jerryd's head is likely to explode any day now and probably won't be able to manage another full season buried on the bench without asking for (and receiving) a trade. It only makes sense that it would be nice to have a guy as something of an heir apparent to Miller at some point.

both Rudy and Brandon should be able to guard some PGs adequately. I'd like to see some more of that. But we've already seen them teamed effectively quite a bit on the wings with Brandon guarding the other team's SF. Brandon would probably rather just guard other SGs... I can see how fans would want him to just do whats best for the team and keep this sort of stuff in house.

I'm hoping to see Rudy get 25-30 MPG this year

Because I don't want either defending a small forward for much of the game.

I think it's plausible for Roy and Rudy to be on the floor together, but ideally it should not involve either one chasing a point guard around. Roy guarding a small forward isn't as bad, but that also shouldn't be the normal state of things.

Ultimately, I want Batum to start and get more and more minutes. I consider him a more promising talent than Rudy, so if one has to be groomed as a "sixth man," I'd rather it were Rudy. That said, a Miller/Rudy/Roy perimeter can work for pieces of the game. The team has enough players who can flex between positions to allow a number of possible lineups. My standpoint is that I want Roy and Aldridge playing as many minutes as possible, Oden is my top priority to develop and Batum comes in second. So those are basically the four most important players to get playing time, to me.

I wouldn't mind Rudy Roy and Batum at the 1, 2 & 3 getting a little run this year

offensively that looks fine (and I'm sure we'll see it at times) but defensively it leaves something to be desired regardless of where you put Nic (on either a three or a one) one way or another you've got Rudy or Roy guarding a point or a small forward and neither are particularly well suited to either position.

how about a box in one with Nic on the primary ballhandler?

Sure ... until they're playing a zone busting team with a lot of good to great shooters. A box-and-one is fine in certain situations, but it will be inherently limited to certain matchups and game situations.

The answer is pretty simple...Roy/Rudy spend more time at the 3, which means less minutes for Webster and Batum (*gasp*).

What young PG's out there are worth trading Rudy for?

I like Conley, Augustin, etc, but no way would I deal Rudy for them.

To get a tier above them KP will probably have to package Rudy with another asset.

I think seeing Rudy, Roy, Batum at the 1, 2, and 3 is highly possible in certain situations. There are plenty of teams these days whose starting or back up SF is only 6'5" or 6'6" and most of them aren't star players. I am assuming that Batum would guard the point guard, which is perfectly fine with me. This lineup could be great as long as its in the right situation.

Which is what should probably happen. I wouldn't go out of my way to gut the team, but I imagine a combo of Rudy, Outlaw and/or Bayless (and perhaps a pick) could get you a pretty decent prospect ... I don't really have a name in mind, but that's a lot of heat.

For Spain, Rudy is most effective when he's creating. He has very good court vision with the IQ to go with it. I'd like to see him move in as the primary backup PG/SG down the road. He just needs to work on his ballhandling. He has to be playing 25-30 min/per.

I just hope McMillan's vision of turning Rudy into James Jones is over.

I said I wouldn't mind seeing this trio getting a little run this season... I'm not saying this should be the starting lineup.

These three are probably 3 of their top 4 talents positions 1-3 with 32 year old Miller being the 4th. I think it would be smart to see if the youngins can play together.

Thats where we differ, I believe Rudy is clearly our 4th best talent and it's not even close. I wouldn't be shocked if Batum fell completely out of the rotation this season but I don't see any way Rudy gets less than 20mpg.
