Brandon Roy.... Behind the scenes?

Since it's off day I was just curious to get ur take on Brandon Roy years later. Obviously great player, clutch, etc. But what about locker room and off court version. I've read different articles over years and have come to the conclusion he was somewhat fake. Examples....

The Andre Miller saga was revealed to be Roy's fault.

LA never seemed to love Roy. He has made selfish statements in past. Maybe referring to Roy? Sounds like LA and Roy weren't friends off court.

Quicks story about a newly married blazer with kids who hooked up with girls on the road. Sounded like it was Roy. Also that big money changed guys. Again Roy?

Roy sulking in the series with Dallas cause he wasn't getting minutes.

Roy sulking during the early part of millers first season.

Just curious what other blazer fans think? Was this guy a little bit of a whiner behinds scenes and not the great guy we had all thought? Just some banter on an off day. Thoughts?

I think Roy was a damn good player. I did feel like some of his "Angel Lime-light" was fake

Roy was a fantastic player. On the right team, with health I think he could have been truly great. I did not like him as much on his Blazer team as the combination of him and Nate made the offense too predictable. I love how the team can get you from any angle now. Last two minutes--pick your poison. Much more effective.

I agree that LMA doesn't seem to miss him too much.

The team needed a "face of the franchise" after a pretty dark period and I'm sure marketing did all they could to burnish the truth in pursuit of that goal. To Roy's credit I don't think he ever said he was perfect and wasn't under any obligation to correct a positive public perception.

I just really don't care at this point. He's gone. It's like going back and rehashing Miles, Damon, Sheed, and any of the other guys that were here. I don't care about them at this point. They're gone. We have a new team. These guys aren't angels. They're human beings. They make mistakes. They have egos. You take the good with the bad.

As most everyone else, I absolutely loved him as a player. Off the court? I didn't really care for him. That's why he was never close to being my favorite player like Damian is now.

I think Roy was a bit of poison with team chemistry when he wasn't number 1. But I think that attitude was the reason why he was soooo great. He had the desire to be the best. He wanted the ball in his hands. Hell he even demanded it. That is a superstar…

Our current stars are much different and I love it more. We have this camaraderie that is unlike what I've seen in the past. It vibes the 1998-99 season, with players that could be all-stars, but would rather give up any personal accomplishments for team wins.

And this is why I don't think he and Dame could have co-existed. I think they would have butted heads and Roy would have been unhappy.

I agree with you. Aldridge is cool and allows Lillard the light without fuss. Lillard is the same with Aldridge. They work so perfectly together. Roy would be great on a team with a dominate center. He could play a PG type role on a very damn good team.

Maybe, but I doubt it. In any case it really just doesn't matter that much. It was a promising team destroyed by bad luck and frail bodies, I imagine most of the players that were part of it would rather not dwell on it or rehash it publicly.

Wow, what article was this? I rarely read The Oregonian, but I'd like to read the article. I witnessed a married/committed Blazer during the Roy era 'playin' the groupies at the bar, exchanging numbers, all that jazz.

I remember reading it. It might have been Quick's "farewell to the beat" piece that he wrote, but I can't be sure.

I disagree. Roy always wanted another guard who could spread the floor for him and Lillard would definitely do that and then some.

I think the player Quick was talking about was Gerald Wallace, not Brandon Roy. Go and find the article on Wallace by Quick right after we acquired Wallace. It's pretty glowing about how he is a family man. In Quick's final article, it sounded more like Wallace was the guy who talked about family and then went and had affairs.

BTW, did Roy officially retire from the NBA? I don't recall if he submitted papers to the league office or not. Maybe bring him back mid-season to come off the bench behind Matthews-10 to 15 min. a game? Jk

I'm still having a hard time getting over the PDX downtown photography fiasco. There were no details confirmed that lead me to think ill of him, but it was very suspiciously swept under the rug and made me highly question how genuine his whole "anti-bully" campaign was.

Seems for many, once they are no longer in a position to be a god to you, you find any way to break them down to distance yourself from them? I dunno. Like an ex-gf or something. looking for the flaws instead of remembering the good times. I can try, and think of issues I had with Roy. But most of my instant reaction memories are of good times from him. Well, and the one negative of him finishing with Minnesota. But overall, I think of game winning drives, shots, etc. and how fun it was to root for the team. Way moreso than oh, remember that time he bitched, remember that time he complained about X,y,Z, and then feel good about those days being gone or something.

Which underscores why ALL PR bullshit should be viewed with a jaundiced eye. There's nothing wrong with the message, but remember why teams and athletes engage in it: they're selling you a product.

I remember articles by Quick back in the Roy years that said that the entire team would go out to dinner on the road, and how rare that was in the NBA.

Solid teams need an alpha. Roy was an alpha, but it didn't seem to impact the team on the court, and they actually played above their talent level, IMO.

I dunno, I truly feel Mixum is trying to engage in honest discussion over a standard off-day subject. Certainly, there is enough occasional mention of Roy on these forums that you can't say we don't need to, or shouldn't talk about him. Also, it's a valid point in so much that Roy's good-guy, family man persona off the court was a huge part of his identity here, and why so many fans loved him....
