I still have to pinch myself. I can't believe we FINALLY have a player of that high regard. Top 6 player in the league? We haven't had one in YEARS. I keep thinking only we like him because he's a Blazer but he's actually an elite player says the formula. I love it. Better than Kobe.

Whoa! It's weird to see Roy ranked with those elite players. I don't know if many people consider him a top 10 player, but he is definitely irreplaceable on our team. We would be a lottery team without Roy, I would think.

PER doesn't really prove that Roy is better than Kobe, but I guess you could use it as a piece of evidence if you were trying to make that argument. But Boozer is ranked ahead of Kobe, so PER is obviously not perfect in regards to quantifying players.
 
Boozer, when he plays, is pretty damn good. We're all lucky he didn't stay in Cleveland or we'd never have a chance to win the championship.
 
Look, Kobe Bryant is up there with Mao, Stalin, Hitler and Roy Cohn, but there's no way Brandon's better. If anything, it shows the flaw in the PER system.
 
A bunch of Clipper season ticket holders in the third row center kept saying that Brandon was just like Kobe, except he wasn't an asshole. I thought that was pretty funny.

It shows that Roy is dominating the ball more than Kobe this year. Kobe is deferring to his teammates more than ever.

LOL! I actually admire Clipper fans. They could hop on the glamour bandwagon, but instead choose to suffer. There's something noble in that.

Yeah, we talked to several of them. They were all pretty cool--except for a few Laker fan wannabes who couldn't afford tickets to the Laker game, so they show up to thrash on the Clips.

One of the Clippers' announcers said he would include Roy among a group of about 5 players that he thought you could build a team around.

The Clips' announcers were VERY complimentary of Roy.

In the second photo, I'm on the bottom right in the red jersey with the very large forhead. I like to think of it as extra brain space. Xericx took some photos at half time that will get posted that should be better of the S2 guys.

They were very complimentary of the entire Portland team. I was impressed with them. A couple of classy guys, for sure.
 
Kobe's declined a bit off his peak of a couple of years ago, so it's conceivable that Roy has caught him, though I'm still a little skeptical. Roy has been unbelievably good this season. I want to see if he can keep it up.

But Kobe really shouldn't be mentioned with Lebron James anymore. It was competitive a couple of years ago, but Kobe has dropped off a bit and LeBron has managed to get even better. James is now the clear-cut #1, and I'd say Chris Paul is probably the second-best player in the NBA.

So I guess we can make a final call on who will be better, Jarret Jack or Chris Paul? ;)

They're both averaging 5.2 assists per game, Kobe's assists are down from a year ago, and Kobe shoots more shots per game than Roy... to summarize, you're wrong in every way possible.

This thread is silly, and many of the comments are as well. LBJ and Roy play on teams that suck
without them (i.e. borderline nonplayoff teams), so they have to do everything themselves. Kobe
doesn't, he can pick his spots, and take over in the 4th if need be. I really really really really don't
like Kobe, but you can't look at these simple stats and really come to a meaningful conclusion.

I absolutely adore Roy, but the truth is that he still doesn't bring it every night.

When the stats match one's observations, that's a pretty good combination. I watch quite a bit of Kobe Bryant (and LeBron James and Brandon Roy, since all three are among my favourite players to watch) and even with no PER numbers, I'd have concluded that Kobe Bryant has declined and that Roy has been his equal so far this season. The fact that PER validates that only makes me believe it is more likely.

Where my skepticism comes in is whether Roy is actually this good or just having a huge half-season. I'm still no sure whether he can keep this amazing pace up long-term.

Well Pau Gasol was actually our most consistent player through November, but Kobe turned it up in December. He's gotten better every month and for the last 30 games he doesn't look like he's lost much. He was at pretty much 25 PER a couple of games ago, until that ring finger dislocation.

Heh. It's a testament to how great a player Kobe is/was that 25 PER does represent a drop-off. A few years ago, he was in the 27-28 PER range.

He hasn't fallen off a ton, but at 27-28 PER, he'd be significantly better than Roy. At 25 PER, Roy is (for now) right there with him. Maybe Roy will fall off and/or Kobe will get better, but 25 PER seems more like Kobe's general level now. I would love for that to be Roy's general level too.
 
I watch half the games listening to the opposing teams announcers and all of them put Roy up there with Paul, Kobe and Wade (except the douche bag Cav's announcers). It's interesting to hear people who live in Portland say they are surprised to see he is in that company. Anyone who follows the NBA has him in their top 10 right now.
 
My two cents is that Kobe is still 95% of what his peak performance in his career has been. This year his dropoff in stats is just that there are so many quality players around him to share the load. Just think about this...the year Kobe was going crazy almost every game and had the 81 point game this is who he played with...


Odom-- The ONLY above average talent besides Kobe
Kwame--LOL, total scrub
Smush Parker- out of NBA
Sasha- when he still couldnt shoot or defend
D. George- total scrub
B. Cook- can he do ANYTHING besides make the occasional wide open jumper?
Luke Walton- eh. he can play but cmon...
C. Mihm- Just a tall white stiff, only played 59 games
Turiaf- rookie played 23 games after heart surgery
Bynum- getting next to nothing play time, nor should he have
Mckie- wore a suit every game
Medvedenko- youre kidding right?
Von Wafer- too bad it wasnt the 08/09 version

that team sucked sooooo much...and Kobe still took it to 7 games with the Suns
 
The stats are nearly equal, and Roy has played better than I ever believed he could this year. That said, Kobe is still a better defender, and as clutch as Roy has been this season, would you really (hypothetically, of course- and personal opinions about him aside) want anyone other than Kobe taking the final buzzer-beating shot for your team? KB is a flat MURDERER in the fourth quarter, and has ripped all our hearts out on a few occasions.

Roy is getting there, but until I see some ice cold in the clutch PLAYOFF BBall from him, he ain't better than Kobe. You could make a case that he is playing as well, but if you have seen any Laker games, you probably wouldn't say better.

Brandon is my favorite pro to watch though- I have never seen a smoother, more under control player. Plus that Hardaway-like crossover is ridiculous!
 
Anyone who doesn't cheat on his wife and anally-rape little girls is better than Kobe.

The other guys on that list are impressive though.
