• Sixteen teams to begin competing in the summer of 2016, with a strong preference for players who have competed in the NBA during the last three years. According to George, the New York team is already fully formed and includes former NBA players Al Harrington, Rasheed Wallace and Maurice Ager. Teams in Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Miami, Orlando, Atlanta and Cleveland are up next, with the goal to employ approximately 250 players in all (170 on teams, others as player-coaches or in other roles). Each team would have two former NBA All-stars on the roster and a Hall of Famer in the front office. George said that 60 players have committed to this point, with many more "in the pipeline" while the subsequent teams are rolled out.

Another former Trail Blazer gets a mention later in the story:

The first charity game, scheduled to be aired on ESPN's digital channel, ESPN3, will take place on Jan. 29 in Saint Louis University's Chaifetz Arena. Proceeds from the event will go to the Jimmy-Valvano-inspired "V Foundation" and the "Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund" which is in honor of the ESPN broadcaster who died of cancer in early January. Among the expected participants in that game, according to George: Rip Hamilton, Brandon Roy,Josh Howard and Harrington.

Al Harrington is retired? I forgot all about him. lol.

It would be such a shame if Antonio Harvey signed up, but I guess I'd just have to get used to someone else on the radio broadcasts. :smiley-pray:

THE SCHONZ!!!! make it happen!!!!

I've been wanting a seniors league NBA tour forever! The seniors league in tennis is awesome!

This reminds me of a failed allstar event where they had old retired players or "legends" or whatever they called them out there playing 5vs5. I think half of them got hurt.

Half court 3 on 3 would be my way of doing it...tennis does that...shortens the match time for the seniors.

I think half-court, or fewer than 5 guys, would be boring and pointless. However, adopting some sort of line rules like lacrosse could be an interesting way to reduce the physical toll basketball takes on the body. And then coaching/strategy become even more important.

I disagree..half court three on three is the norm on courts all over the globe...some great tournaments..the advantage is you get the vets skills without them running the full court game which is why they are retired pretty much anyway. You could have two games at once on a court.

My ADD is yelling at you.

If I were inclined to watch non-NBA basketball it sure wouldn't be to watch half-court basketball - especially played by guys who were once pros. I'd rather watch And1, or community rec league games. Watching 3-on-3 sounds boring as shit - at that point you might as well just go play it yourself. Fun to play, boring to watch.

However, in this ex-NBA league I think you could try things like SAC's owner wants to do: have a designated cherry-picker. I think it could get interesting if the rules state that you HAVE to leave at least one player on each side of the court. Strategy could get really interesting with that rule, where the decision is made on the fly each possession. You could have a "mid-fielder" rule where one player is only allowed to operate between the 3-point lines (again, a way to reduce physical toll), and now you're looking at only being able to have 3 guys on the floor who can go anywhere they want.

I like that idea. Have games to 21; win two out of three games in a match; or 3 of 5. Stagger games.

I don't want to see him get re-ingured in the game

His career as an NBA player is long over. So all he has to be able to do is live life, like walk around and watch kids games and go out to eat and such. If he hurts himself bad, like real bad, he could always get a knee replacement with his $100 million so I have little concern with his long term well being. About a billion less fortunate people in the world we should worry about.

This is not going to end well.

exactly...I thought they should have these as warmups to NBA games..would be great.

To me what would be boring would be watching guys with bad knees trying to run full court..gasping for air

Yeah it would be interesting seeing some hall of fame players on the low block, shooting jumpers, crossover dribble moves, or crafty passes. But I have zero desire to see them running full court. Many high school teams with teenagers could do better.

He's playing in Australia for the Sydney Kings, as an injury replacement for Josh Childress.

Spot the former Trail Blazer.

Rasheed Wallace. Has time to work on his trick shots. Check out this one in the video from Twitter:
