The much-anticipated return of Brandon Roy to the Rose Garden will not happen this week after the Minnesota guard and former Trail Blazers legend has scheduled a right knee surgery for this week, The Oregonian has learned.

The arthroscopy will be the seventh of his career, dating back to high school, and the fifth since he has been a professional. It is unknown how long Roy will be sidelined.

A three-time All-Star and former Rookie of the Year for the Blazers, Roy left Portland in December of 2011 when he medically retired because of arthritic and degenerative knees. The Blazers later used the league’s Amnesty Clause to waive Roy, a move that allowed Roy to be paid the remaining $63 million of his contract, while exempting him from their salary cap.

Roy signed a two-year contract with Minnesota in July that pays him $5.4 million this season, with the second year non-guaranteed depending on how many criteria he meets this season, such as games played.

Roy decided to make a comeback last spring after taking the season off and receiving Regenokine treatments, which uses a patient’s blood to help reduce swelling in the knee joint.

Roy played five games for the Timberwolves, averaging 5.8 points, 4.6 assists and 2.8 rebounds while shooting 31.4 percent from the field in 24.4 minutes a game. He banged his right knee in Minnesota’s final preseason game on Oct. 26 against Milwaukee, forming a bump and a bruise. He said he later aggravated the knee when a teammate bumped him in practice, then again on Nov. 9 in the first half against Indiana. He did not play in the second half of the Indiana game, then missed the next four games.

On Thursday in Minneapolis, Roy was still hopeful he would be able to play Friday in Portland, where he spent his first five seasons. But he said no matter what happens the rest of this season, he has no regrets.

“I wouldn’t be disappointed either way,’’ Roy said. “If it ends in three weeks, it ends. It’s over. I’m totally satisfied with what I’ve done. I know the sacrifice and the effort that I put into coming back. It took a lot of discipline to get to where I am, That’s all I care about: how hard I’ve worked.’’

Roy had planned to spend Thanksgiving at his Portland home with his wife, two kids and several family members, who would make the three hour drive from his hometown of Seattle. He said he was looking forward to playing his first game at the Rose Garden since his memorable Game 4 performance in the 2010 NBA playoffs, when he scored 18 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter against Dallas.

"It’s going to be special. It's going to be weird,'' Roy said on Thursday, before he knew he would have surgery. "I use to walk to that locker room in the Rose Garden... and you know, I felt like I owned the place. Now, I come back as a visitor, so it’s weird. It’s like you buy a house, sell it, and then go back to the house, but it’s somebody else's. Now it’s LaMarcus’, the new rookie ... it’s their house now. But again, that’s kind of the excitement in it. There’s new blood there and at the same time, I had my moment.''

Wow well glad we closed the book on the Roy chapter. Really sucks cause I didn't want him to go out like this, but maybe this is all he needed to see. Now he can retire knowing it's over.

I can't believe Brandon has any cartilage left to remove, wonder if it's bone chips (debris) or a tendon? any details?

Yah, I don't understand what good another surgery can do for him?

he just needs to face reality and let it go, he's got a family and a ton of money

And, thanks to David Kahn, $5.4 million more than he had a couple months ago. That works out to $1.08 million per game, or $44,262.30 per minute played. That's an hourly wage of $2.66 million per hour. Not bad work, if you can get it.

After his knee surgery today, Brandon Roy will not accompany team to Portland for Friday's game. He will fly to Seattle for T-Giving w/fam

Roy purchased three luxury suites for family and friends for Friday's game at Rose Garden. He will now donate the suites to charity

Re: Roy to undergo surgery again

For his own sake and his health I really hope he hangs it up.

Hey Brandon, I'm not above accepting charity from those more fortunate than myself.

Sincerely,
BNM

agreed. I would hope him having a surgery not even a MONTH into the season is a red flag and a reality check for him.

I'm not sure what he's holding onto... he had a great career, despite it's short period of time. He won't win a championship with Minnesota, so what's left to prove?

Re: Roy to undergo surgery again

Kinda sad...like the props to Dame, though. :)

Re: Roy to undergo surgery again

"Props"? He doesn't even know his name.

Re: Roy to undergo surgery again

The chaces that Roy becomes a legit NBA player has decreased from 20% to 3%. He has had other things to worry about than the Rookie of the Year race.

Re: Roy to undergo surgery again

And he gets to collect all that money once again. He fooled us on his contract and he hoodwinked Minny as well. He's a smart cat.

Jeez, I would think that Roy's most recent injury, which will probably end his career, deserves a place of its own in the forum rather than in this sticky . . .

Re: Roy to undergo surgery again

What's karmic about Roy's career being snuffed out? It's not as though Minny was paying him crazy money so it's not really hurting Kahn.

just that kahns move didnt pan out i would guess

It's just a scoping. He banged knees with another player and has some loose cartilage floating around in there. They'll remove it and he'll be back.

Personally I think he should hang it up but he's insistent on riding those knees until they can't even move anymore.

And what's up with him not wearing knee pads?!? For fucks sake, wear some god damn knee pads. This is his 2nd or 3rd surgery for knee on knee damage that could have been lessened or prevented if he had worn knee pads.

Don't think you can really consider it a "recent" injury to be honest
