Yep, there's only so much you can clean out before there's nothing left.

So yes, it went well in that they cleaned out what they had to clean out and he didn't die on the table. But, the material they removed is either cartridge, which he really has none left, or bone chips, which indicates the knee continues to deteriorate and break down.

Whether, or not, the surgery went well isn't really the issue. The issue is the guy can't play more than a few games without needing surgery to clean up the damage caused by playing the game of basketball. He really should have stayed retired, and it has nothing to do with tarnishing his legacy. He should have stayed retired because of the irreparable damage playing basketball causes his body. Every surgery he has they remove something. They aren't putting anything back to replace what they are removing and it's not growing back on its own. He needs to realize this and accept it.

Re: Roy to undergo surgery again

What's karmic about Roy's career being snuffed out? It's not as though Minny was paying him crazy money so it's not really hurting Kahn.

Paying Roy anything over the vet minimum is crazy money.

Will he be at the Rose Garden tonight? I'd love for him to be introduced and for the fans to give him an opportunity to show him some affection. I am of the belief he single-handedly saved this franchise and may be its most important player other than Bill Walton and Clyde Drexler.

I will always be a Brandon Roy fan.

That's too bad. Thanks for the update. Repped.

You're right, that was much more insightful and doesn't make it sound like he is contemplating retirement.

And with the calm that made him one of the game's best finishers, he explains that his knees have reached Level III arthritis. There are only four stages.

"Level IV," Roy says fearlessly, "is when you get a knee replacement."
So why do this? He doesn't need the money. He doesn't want the attention. He doesn't need the validation. Why risk his long-term health? Why endure the pain? Why?

Two reasons, Roy says.

When he walked away from the Blazers and the NBA, he felt it wasn't on his terms. And as a result he lost himself.

This comeback, then, is not about rediscovering glory, or proving doubters wrong.

He is searching for himself. Searching for peace.

Is the arthritis thing not a big deal? I don't see anyone talking about it. How long will it take for it to become level IV? Presumably it'll be a lot faster than it would take in a non-athlete.

He's retiring. He's going to wait a month and then unretire and sign with the Lakers.

Timberwolves guard Brandon Roy in working on strengthening his knee and went through a non-contact practice on Thursday. Roy underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Nov. 19 after playing in only five games this season.
"I've been doing some cardio, working on strengthening my right knee. Next week I hope to go full bore," Roy said on Thursday. Roy added that he is confident that he will be able to return and that his knee feels better since undergoing surgery; there is no specific timetable for his return.
Roy retired after the 2010-11 season due to bone-on-bone pain in both of his knees. He decided to return to the league this year and signed with the Timberwolves on July 31, but suffered a set back after a collision in a preseason game on Oct. 26. In his five games this season, Roy is averaging 5.8 points and 4.6 assists in 24.4 minutes per game.
