First of all, I read every day. At least 30 minutes a day. 2nd YOU pick up a book. Sure Jesse Jackson popularized the term back in the 80's but it's first known printed usage was 233 years ago. So next time you want to talk shit you should know WTF you're talking about...
My memory is that as the civil rights movement of the 50's and 60's gained steam, black leaders asked that black people be called negros, blacks, and finally african-americans. It was a sort of political correctness (one that I don't have a beef with) related to lack of black history taught to western civilizations, especially the subsahara regions of africa.
FWIW, I call black people "black" because it was the term they said they preferred in the 60s when I grew up in Obama's neighborhood (Kenwood, south side of Chicago).
