Yea that is crazy. My mom has Parkinsons, so I know how rough that road can be.
 
Well that sucks.

I am tired of hearing about cancer, MS and Parkinson's. Too many friends, and people that seem to be great individuals have been stricken

Right-from the article, though, it sounds like this is very rare for someone this young to get it. Usually, when you hear "Parkinsons" you don't think of a 37 year old ex-NBA player, you think of someone your grandma's age.

Does anyone know an email or address that I could contact Grant? I work on Parkinson research and would like to send him my best wishes and let him know some of the research that is currently being conducted which is not easy for the public to learn about. Let him know that here are big strides being made and that he should remain hopeful that our scientists can find a cure.

Hey if you would be willing I would like to see anything coming up as well, I am constantly scavenging the web on the lookout for anything that can help out my mom coming down the line, I am not sure how many more years she is going to be able to hold out.
 
I grew up with someone who's dad has Parkinsons and has had it for years. He recently had some brain surgery or something for it and he hardly shows any signs of it now. Its crazy cause this guy had CRAZY visible signs of it, it was hard to watch cause you feel so bad. But the surgery seemed to really help.

lol is that Joe Blouin? that is crazy if they were able to fix him...maybe there is hope for BG after all.
 
It usually does show up in early middle age.

Sadly, it is a heritable disease that does not usually manifest until after the affected person has already had children. So it's just cross your fingers that your kids did not get it.

+1. I'll add Alzheimer's to the list as well. I definitely think all of them are curable. It's just a matter of time. Unfortunately, many of these people will never have enough time to find out.

I know it won't make any difference, but I'm sending out some positive vibes towards Mr. Grant. Get well, Brian.

Yea that surgery is really invasive and a high percentage of folks who have it come out with side effects. I believe you are talking about Deep Brain Stimulation, where they put electrodes into you brain to try and stop the shaking Parkinsons has. The only thing is, it doesn't solve the disease, it only treats the symptoms. When a person starts demonstrating symptoms of Parkinsons, typically they have less than 20% of their neuron cells left alive in their brain. So it is just a matter of time before it's over.

Is it true that the onset of Parkinson's can be accelerated by a history of concussions/head injuries? I don't specifically remember BG having that kind of injury - but given his style of play, it wouldn't surprise me if he did.

Possibly. Look at Muhammad Ali. He has Parkinsons and had massive head injuries in the ring. Let's face it, anything that kills brain cells can't be good for you in the long run.
 
My dad was diagnosed 5 years with Parkinson's. It's really slowed him down but he still gardens and keeps bees.
 
That breaks my heart. I hope that he can battle it out the same way he took on Karl Malone. Stay strong, big man.
 
No doubt the Rasta Monsta will fight through this as much as he can. He's still one of my favorite Blazers of all-time no matter what other fans try to say about him when he left.
 
This sucks and is frankly shocking to me. He should have his jersey retired simply for taking all the elbows from Elbows Malone.
 
Hate to see this happen to anyone, but especially to such a classy guy like Grant. In this discussion, his career achievements mean nothing to me. What counts is he is a damn good person who loves his family and stays humble. I know you'll pull through BG.
 
I didn't even know that Brian had moved back to Portland? Hopefully he can battle the disease effectively. I'd like to see him do some work with the Blazers in some way if possible too.
