Yes, you get the general idea. McCann does not hurt the Yanks — unlike others — in the midst of a rebuild. He only provides depth, poise, and production.

Keeping McCann around for the long haul may be more imperative than anyone would have expected.

Makes sense Mattingly although with sanchez firmly implanted as the starter and Romine showing more than capable as a backup wouldn't mind getting another young starter from braves or other team needing a catcher for system or or current yankee roster. I guess it will depend on whether Mccann wants to be a dh at this point in his career or still wants to be a catcher.

I like McCann, the man is a professional, when the Yankees signed him I figured good hire. McCann has handled the staff well, been a presence. Possibly he's come up a bit short at the dish than expected but hell as far as I'm concerned I hope the Yankees keep him on if he so desires to stay. Heard rumor mill things about a possible return to Atlanta, again mentoring a young pitching staff. Whatever happens, I wish him well, the guy is a class act from day one.

touche- to a Bulldog of a Catcher with the Leather and Gear. His approach seems to of always been solid, and he's had better years with the bat, but, his value defensively makes him a player's catcher, and not a DH, wouldn't ya' say? I also wish Mc√a a long healthy career.

I can see McCann sticking around for another year. If the Yankees have to pick up a bulk of his salary I don't see the point of trading him and I can't see any team giving up much of anything for him.

...the Yanx have eaten portions of players' salaries before in order to trade them. AJ Burnett comes to mind...they essentially gave him to the Pirates because the players the Yanx received in return did not pan out. The Yanx also agreed to pay more than 1/2 ($18 Mil) of AJ's remaining $31 Mil contract.

...the point of trading McCann and eating for example, 1/2 ($8.5 Mil) of his yearly salary is that they will be saving the other 1/2 $8.5 every year and also freeing up a roster spot in the process.

...if you think about it, they did nearly the same thing with ARod because they finally realized the made a mistake with the contract to begin with and the best thing for the roster/team was to lick their wounds and not keep the player on the roster simply because they still owed him money.

...Now, I realize that unlike ARod, McCann is younger and can still play defense, and don't get me wrong, I like McCann but let's face it, he's nowhere near the player the Yanx thought they were getting when they signed him .
