They say consumers, particularly those overseas, have made it clear they won't watch films when the actors use condoms, complaining that it is distracting and ruins the fantasy.

I'm sure that if all porn involved condom usage, porn consumers would get used to it. Perhaps rather than ruining the fantasy, condoms would simply become a normative part of it. Were that to occur, there would be benefit not only to the performers, but also to the consumers, their partners, and society as a whole.

You can't actually compel an industry to create a product that the market doesn't want

Perhaps not, but you can certainly prevent an industry from subjecting its employees to inherently harmful working conditions, and you can also prevent an industry from creating a product that is harmful to its consumers. There is legal precedent for both.

how is it harmful to its consumers, exactly? Also, legal precedent of prevent an industry from creating a product harmful to its consumers. I would think tobacco and alcohol would fall pretty squarely into that category, and is still around.

the LA City Council are the most ass backwards fuckheads in America. way to kill a billion dollar industry in LA and have them move to Miami or Vegas.

This is a bit of a stretch, I admit. But if my initial premise is valid--that condom-free porn promotes condom-free sex--then it can be contended that it promotes the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases, thereby harming consumers.

Harmful toys, controlled substances, lead paint, toxic pesticides--need I go on?

Yet another reason why universal health-care coverage is a horrible idea.

I would think there's a difference between harmful toys and porn, I dunno.
Otherwise, wouldn't a lot of "normal" movies fall under the same issue. If someone is copying things done in a movie, no movie is safe.

I figure no thread on porn is complete without my avatar.

Carry on.

to be fair, condoms are super gross, and what about oral? those crazy pussy eating condoms that nobody uses?? puh leez

Consider the purpose of the movie. What normal movies exist solely for the purpose of depicting a fantasy that can actually be recreated in reality? Porn is a very different medium from all other movies.

The purpose is to entertain. If people picture it as their life, so be it. How many girls want a "knight in shining armor" like in movies? Romantic comedies are fantasies to them. Some people just watch to be entertained, and a little of that could very easily be placing yourself in the movie, any movie. I remember when I watched Top gun for the first time when I was little, and thought of being a fighter pilot. And pretended I was when I watched it on subsequent viewings. Should it be disallowed, because could have sent me to war?

By your premise all citizens should be forced to always use condoms when having sex, since the danger of spreading std's is far more prevalent in the general populace than it is in the porn industry where participants go through the most frequent and complete testing known to man.

Pretty much the bulk of them.
