Victoria Azarenka starts 2016 with strong showing at Brisbane International

On the surface, Victoria Azarenka's first outing of 2016 was little more than the equivalent of popping into the office to check a few emails, say hello to a some colleagues and head off nice and early ahead of a potentially busy week.

The scoreline suggested the 2012-13 Australian Open champion made short work of Ukraine's Elena Vesnina – an opponent she had already beaten six times in as many outings – in the opening round of the Brisbane International.

The truth was Azarenka had to earn the 6-2 6-0 win the hard way, taking nearly 90 minutes to wrap things up on Pat Rafter Arena. For someone who hadn't played since September, they could be valuable minutes ahead of the Australian Open.

Victoria Azarenka wins Brisbane International for 1st title since 2013

A polished victory at the Brisbane International finally ended a prolonged, disorganized and painful wait between titles for Victoria Azarenka, extending back to August 2013 when she beat Serena Williams in Cincinnati.

She won the Australian Open that year, too, successfully defending her 2012 title, and in a period when she was at the peak of her game.

Coming to Brisbane, the season-opening event she won in its inaugural year in 2009, Azarenka was unseeded after slipping in the rankings to No. 22 at the end of 2015 following two injury-interrupted seasons.

Milos Raonic got one back on Roger Federer to start the new season. After losing coach Ivan Ljubicic to the Federer camp leading into 2016, Raonic achieved something nobody else born in the 1990s has managed to do against the 17-time major winner -- beat him twice.

The 25-year-old Canadian broke Federer's serve once in each set of a 6-4, 6-4 win on Sunday night in the Brisbane International decider, reversing the outcome of their meeting in last year's final at the Australian Open warmup tournament.
