According to a new study published online in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Academy B, invasive Burmese pythons are disrupting the food chain in Florida’s Everglades National Park. In 2013 a group of researchers noted that while there was an increase in the Burmese python population, the number of small mammals was somehow declining.
Suspicions were voiced but at the time there was no real evidence to actually confirm the suspicions. An investigative team from the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Florida came up with an experiment to reveal any potential connection between the two.
For the experiment, scientists put special tracking devices on 26 rabbits and let them run free in the park. At first, the rabbits reportedly settled in and even began breeding. Researchers thought they were thriving said Robert McCleery a University of Florida biologist. Once the temperature rose, however, the rabbits began to somehow disappear.
