Buzz: The Rangers Are Desperate For Help/Could Move Michael Del Zotto

According to Bruce Garrioch, in the Ottawa Sun, the Rangers are one of a few teams who are very desperate to acquire help.

Garrioch says that Michael Del Zotto is one of the names being discussed. He notes that Del Zotto has “dramatically regressed and underperformed” lately.

Del Zotto is an RFA at the end of this season.

Del Zotto is averaging 19:16 per game, has two assists, is a minus five and has 19 shots on goal.

To me it is very simple with DZ. The Rangers have two choices, and it isn't complicated:

1. Deal him now for a much needed decent 20 goal +/- scorer upfront.
2. Keep him and re-sign him to a 3 or 4 year 3 or 4 mill per deal this summer.

I don't see any other choices here. I know where I lean big time. Which is why now is 100% the time to deal MDZ whether you love him or hate him. Unless you want to sign on for a nice deal this summer, he must be dealt.

Garrioch is a moron who knows nothing about the game of MDZ or the Rangers. The Rangers aren't desperate at all. Their division stinks, and they are two points out of 3rd in the division, three out of second in the division and they have a game in hand. If anything, the emergence of Kreider along with Pouliot adding a winger with some size and scoring, the Rangers are probably one of the least desperate teams. Callahan is supposed to be back soon. A three game winning streak, Kreider playing like a number one pick and some goaltending took this team from desperate to confident. MDZ isn't being used on the PP. Right now AV is just letting him concentrate on playing better defense. He's also trying to see if McDonagh can be on the first PP unit.

Who cares if they are desperate or not, that is not the point really, the point is they are, OR SHOULD BE, shopping MDZ. That is the point here. Not whether or not they are doing it out of desperation.

It is just common sense now I think. Unless you want to re-sign him for a deal similar to what I wrote, now is the time. Not to mention we could use another solid winger AND we have some good young dmen coming up ready to take DZ's place anyway. Very logical now.

Hardly see the Rangers as desperate, they were beaten handily by two of the best teams in the NHL at this time to start the season. Staal is -11 and has 15 SOG averaging 20:16 on ice but I doubt the Rangers are desperate to move him either though he would be a more logical trade. Sounds like the ramblings of a numbnuts Canook. Would have no problem with the Rangers resigning MDZ for Girardi money, send Stralman packing and fill his spot with a kid.

The Rangers should sell high on Stralman now. MDZ isn't what most fans wanted right now at 23 years old. However, he doesn't suck like many Rangers fans think. They are just comparing him to guys like McDonagh, Girardi and Staal when those guys are playing well. You can't do that. Staal has been awful this season until the past couple games.

I like McIlrath a ton and always have and I like this kid Allen a lot. They can move MDZ for the right forward. Stralman I would package to dump worthless Pyatt for picks or a Pouliot type.

My lord you guys miss the main point here...WHO CARES IF THEY ARE DESPERATE OR NOT...that is not the main point here. The main point is they should be looking to deal DZ, that is what this is about.

You are on record as saying you would give DZ a nice contract for 3 or 4 years worth 3 or 4 mill per panzer, that is cool. I simply couldn't disgaree more when you combine DZ's play, with our need for another decent scorer, with the fact that he still has good value, with the fact that we have a handful of dmen ready to come up soon, but I respect your opinion.

And BTW...what do you think we get for Stralman? No point in even mentioning him really. He is a 3rd pair dman that wouldn't get us that much in return, so the reality is we don't gain much in dealing him, and his 1.7 mill cap hit that is up this summer anyway.

The choice is clear. Deal DZ now for a decent scorer, or re-sign him this summer, that is the choice IMO.

Sell high on Stralman? Here we go again dump. Yes, 6th dman Anton Stralman I am sure will get us a great haul, double so when he is a UFA this summer...come on.

As for DZ, this is one of those I am dump and can NEVER EVER admit I was wrong things. I don't need to compare him to McD, or Staal, or Girardi to see what he is right now. A soft, "offensive" dman, who cannot shoot. That is Michael Del Zotto. I say again, he can get better at 23, NO DOUBT, but right now that is what he is.

Deal him now or re-sign him this summer. You make the call.

No, it's one of those, you can't ever look at this player objectively Chuck. Who gives a crap about the return for Stralman. Learn to read some of what we write. The point was if they traded Stralman, they could use him to dump Pyatt and clear a spot for McIlrath or Allen. Also, you never look at things like a GM. Just like a fan. On this team Stralman is a 6th defenseman. On the Oilers or Devils, he might be a first pairing guy. That is why you continue to never get the value of players correct. You look a the player on this team, not where that player would fit in on another team.

I agree with you here dump, but you can't call Stralman a "train-wreck" one day, then turn around and say he could be a 1st pairing guy the next day. That doesn't make any sense at all.

He's a train wreck in half the games he plays on this team. Always thought so. However, when you look at the total crap that the Oilers and Devils use as defenseman, as bad as Stralman is half his games here, he would be a huge upgrade for those two loser teams. Same for the Flyers who have a bunch of rejects as defenseman.

We are back in dump fantasy land where all us Ranger fans underrate our players, and dump has all these MAGICAL deals that we basically unload players that he calls crap, like Pyatt and Stralman, and we get a good return. The deals never happen, but just trust dump everyone, we underrate our guys. What a comical joke.

How about we just clear some room by dealing DZ for a decent scoring winger. And just cutting Pyatt or sending him down. How about that. Or maybe you rather give DZ that nice deal this summer dump? Do I like MDZ...no. Am I biased when it comes to him...yes. I freely admit that. BUT that still doesn't change the fact of where we are now dump.

We have some good young dmen who will be ready soon.
DZ's game has not progressed the way we all would have hoped it would.
We can use another decent scoring winger.
DZ still has solid value.
AND most importantly it is either deal him now or re-sign him to a nice deal this summer. Either or.

Add it all up, and "hatred" or not, it makes 100% sense to deal MDZ now. That is it.

And again to show how lost you are, my dislike for MDZ goes back way before the Devs series. I have been on this train for nearly 3 years now. So the Devil series was not the straw with me. MDZ is who he is. An "offensive" dman that cannot shoot, and is soft. That is MDZ right now.

My god you are dense dude. The fact that I was "down on" MDZ well before the Devil series should obviously tell you it has nothing to do with that series. But if you want to continue to be the complete jack off you can be when you are wrong, that is cool. You do what you have to do. The Devil series is way over and behind us, and my dislike of DZ has to do with his overall play, not one random series where just about everyone played poorly dump.

The Rangers are not desperate, but if Sather can deal DZ to make this team better then he needs to make the move. The problem is, are other GM's viewing them as desperate and trying to low ball them? I honestly don't know what DZ is worth anymore, but in my opinion he did play much better last night. The simple truth with him, is that he needs to start playing with more confidence. He has the talent, he wouldn't be calling the Garden his home if he didn't. Stop worrying about mistakes, and go out there and make things happen. He plays for the Rangers, so I want him to play well. The sad truth is that he just hasn't become the player we were expecting. Maybe this week ... Hope so.

He will never be that player if he doesn't get PP time. My biggest problem with MDZ is that he hasn't improved his shot enough. It got a little better but it needs to get a lot better for him to become the point guy that they thought he would become.

Then he needs to go out and earn more PP time. It would be nice to see him take a lesson from Kreider, and just say #uck it, and go out there and play hard every time he steps out on the ice (that's what it looks like Kreider is doing). For starters, always try and be the first to the puck. He got his start at the Garden at what 20? That's a lot to ask of anybody, much less somebody just out of his teens. If you aren't up to it mentally, you are just asking for trouble. I don't know what's going on in the locker room, much less what he's reading or hearing on the streets, but I'll bet it's not good. To me, he has the look of somebody who is ready for a fresh start anywhere else. And in the right system, and city, he could flourish. But you can't just give him away.

I think the NHL should put a team back in Quebec IMO. I think that is a good hockey market, and they are willing to build a new arena. The NHL would be smart to go back there again.

And that's why they should deal him for Hemsky(I know Dump )and Petry, you get a guy who can score 15-20 and a replacement for DZ who can shoot well and isn't much older and more physical than DZ. The guy can play over 20 min a night. You'd have to throw in prospect like St. Croix to make it work but that's something I would do. I'm not even certain Edmonton would do that with the way DZ's stock has declined some.

The Rangers would never trade MDZ for Hemsky straight up in a million years. His stock has only declined in the eyes of Rangers fans. Not to other GM's. Petry sucks. Every defenseman the Oilers have sucks. Thus why they have the record they do.

Petry dosen't suck, he's just been on a putrid team for 3 years, but he's got a good hard point shot and is perfect for a 6th dman. He's an RFA I think too which is good. He's logged more minutes than DZ has.

The reporter's hometown Ottawa is a point behind the Rangers but the Rangers are the desperate team despite missing two of their best players? Last year's leading scorer Stepan finally scores and the Rangers are desperate? That article is rubbish Chuck, more suited to lining a parrot cage floor than evidence to back up your MDZ hatred. I'll say it again Del Zotto led our defensemen in scoring last year, that's a fact that should dissuade those unfounded claims of regression and why I want the Rangers to resign him. In my opinion I do think he'll only get better, Staal is the guy I'm concerned with. Rarely do the Rangers sign or trade for a "20 goal scorer" who lives up to the billing.

They have no clue. They should have either taken Landeskog over RNH or told RNH he won't see the NHL until he adds about 30 pounds of muscle. The stupid Oilers rush all their prospects.
