The Insurance Big Man

My Candidates: Greg Oden and Andrew Bynum

This one is tough given that oft-injured Bynum may never develop into the type of big man many of us suspect he can be and Oden is foul-machine, which doesn't mesh with the whistle-happy FIBA refs. But the Insurance Big Man will play a bit role in 2010, given that Howard, Bosh, Melo, 'Bron and Durant will gobble up most of the minutes at the 4 and 5.

I'm using this roster spot for development.

If Oden and Bynum get a summer of teaching and experience in Turkey, then think about how strong the Team USA big man corps will be for the London Olympics in 2012.

I'm in the camp that thinks Bynum, more than any other young center (including Howard) has the best chance to be a "dump-it-down" center -- as in, "dump it down to the big man and let him and wheel and deal." Those weeks prior to his 2008 and 2009 injuries were like future dump-it-down highlight reels. Turnarounds, jump hooks, drop steps -- he's even developing a semi-reliable 12-footer. Unfortunately, Bynum has yet to participate in a Team USA minicamp and Colangelo and Coach K have placed a premium on the FIBA familiarity they try to foster at the camps.

For me though, I like covering bases. Oden has a similar skill set to Dwight -- active defenders and rebounders, weak O-games (which is why Kendrick Perkins, Emeka Okafor and a healthy Tyson Chandler don't make sense here, either). A Howard-Bynum tandem means that you could play offense-defense with your center combo. I like that ... I like that a lot.

My Pick: Bynum

Just wanna put this argument to rest once and for all....case closed...next topic

Bynum actually really disappointed me this year outside of a couple weeks.

Oden was also very disappointing.

Howard sucked in the playoffs, but he is head and shoulders ahead of these 2.

Yeah...in the playoffs me and you guys were arguing pretty much which pile of crap stunk less....nothing stellar from either player(but Bynums crap DID stink less for the record) :devilwink:

Howard averaged 20/15/2.6 blocks in the playoffs on 60% shooting. :dunno:

I will say that Bynum regressed last year over 2007-08. He still had a great PER at 20, but his usage was up significantly over 2007-08, when he had a PER over 22.

Bynum is the one laker that I actually like. But I was dissappointed in both he and Oden last year for the most part. They both had some flashes, and Bynum had a few weeks where it looked like he might take off, but then all went to shit.

Being as unbiased as I can, I think Bynum is certainly the better player now overall, and might always be the better player on offense. Oden is the better defender, but has a bigger (much bigger) upside on both sides of the court than Bynum. But given how long the players are in the league, I think I would go with Bynum next year. Two years latter, my guess is that Oden will win the matchup hands down. Unless one or the other gets hurt again.

Unfortunately, Bynum has yet to participate in a Team USA minicamp

That is because he is a classless, immature, crybaby little bitch and Team USA doesn't want him representing our country.

Or because he is focusing on leg strength and/or working out with Dwight Howard to get ripped...as they both said they would be doing together :ghoti:

Perhaps after Oden's 4th year we may get a clearer picture. If you are saying that Bynum in his 4th year is better then Oden during his rookie season then obviously that is true.

If you compare Bynum in his first two years versus Oden in his rookie season, Bynum get's owned.

I don't know which will be better in the long run, but to compare a rookie to a 4th year guy is pretty fucking stupid.

Yes they are working out together becuase they know they are in trouble in 2 seasons when Oden is the premier big man in the league.

Last year was Oden's rookie season, and Bynum's 4th season right? The fact that they were so close in terms of production says something about Bynum, and it isn't very good. Sure, both came back from injuries and that skewed their ineffectiveness farther, but Bynum should have been head and shoulders better, and wasn't.

I don't agree. I think it says good things about Oden. Bynum was very good when he was healthy. Oden was close to him in advanced metrics despite the difference in experience because he's an unusually good talent. I think Bynum is underrated, but then Oden is even more underrated, IMO.

Or trying to avoid another injury?

Or trying to avoid yet another injury to his knee ligaments?
I made some amendments to your quote in bold.

I agree with the thread title as long as you emphasize the last word to indicate the evaluation is... not smart

Bynum and Oden will both be great players in the league as long as they are healthy. We'll see what happens...

(but Bynums crap DID stink less for the record)

I know you're just on a WUM, but Bynum was an absolute fucking disaster in the playoffs.

If Oden's that crap in year 4 of his career in the post season I'll cut my fucking hand off.

(Baring injury of course )

Howard sucked in the playoffs, but he is head and shoulders ahead of these 2.

Howard sucked in the playoffs? 20 ppg? 15 rpg? 2.6 bpg? 60% FGs? Winning games on road in Cleveland and Boston? Scoring 40 in Game 6 of the ECF to lead his team to the Finals?

I wish Oden "sucked" like that.

Howards weaknesses were exposed. For many games he wasn't even the best player on his own team. He was frustrated as well.

I think he may have played well in round one, but toward the end he was super disappointing. Don't just look at stats, you know better than that (maybe not KingSpeed, but still).

What's sort of amusing is that the article being quoted doesn't even say that Bynum is better than Oden. It just says that Oden is too similar to Howard, whereas Bynum is a "dump it down" center. Obviously Howard is already on the team, and you don't want to duplicate skill sets, so Bynum gets the nod. It's actually fairly reasonable and fairly complimentary to Oden (saying he's very similar to Howard). Only a blind Laker fan would have read it otherwise.

I'll be glad if Bynum is picked. I always root against Team USA, and it's one more opportunity for Mr. Brittle to get injured.

...what did Oden do to Bynum on one of the first few plays of this past season?!?!?! Expect A LOT more of the same in the future, enough said.

So Vince Thomas (whoever the f*ck he is) is sucking up to big-city market LA, and l*kerfan "darizzle" likes what he sees... Gee! What a surprise!
