...good luck with that liability hell -- not to mention RVs depreciate at least 50% the moment you drive them off the lot!

Our family is a beach family. We always go there for vacation and whenever we can. That said, I’m off after tomorrow for a month and was wanting to take them somewhere we have never been. So i was thinking a cabin in the woods preferably by a lake or river. Somewhere VERY quiet and relaxing.
Wondering if people have any recommendations or ideas. Fewer people around the better. Thanks......

I think this place fits all your desires >> https://elklakeresort.net/

A reason why you rent them out. It's commonly called a business plan.

3 things they say not to invest in....RV, Boat, Airplane....all 3 are money pits that depreciate...have high maintenance costs and insurance liabilities that will make it nearly impossible to make a profit renting them.....I'm talking about the big RVs...not the mini Winnie's or Sunraders......rentals get abused ...people don't give a shit about caring for them if they rent them..you'd be much better off renting U haul trailers and moving trucks.

Here's an idea...find someone you know who has a cabin on a lake, befriend them (that means become their friend HCP), slowly gain their trust, and then when the time comes, have them will the cabin to you, and then kill them in their sleep.

Easy peasy.

Yep, understood. Hence, my ay yi yi remark. Plus, I do love our little place in FL. It solidly rents out.....WHILE APPRECIATING!!

Was very close to renting an RV to drive my kids to Yellowstone. Everything was booked, so renting an RV was the best option left (or maybe @jonnyboy will rent out his cabin by the stream to me!). Luckily my nephew was able to somehow get an Airbnb. Further out than what I'd like, but we'll be driving. Still thinking I should've rented the RV instead.

I need to watch this again...

Here ya go, man!

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/24/how-this-millennial-family-makes-a-living-traveling-in-their-rv.html

This family sold their house to live in an RV—now they earn over $80,000 a year traveling across the US

It’s hard to get hold of Karen Akpan. One week, the 32-year-old might be visiting family in Florida with her husband, Sylvester, and their son Aiden; the next, the family is sunbathing in Aruba or sightseeing in the Dominican Republic. In the past month alone, their travels also included Colombia, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, where CNBC Make It caught up with them.

The family wasn’t always so mobile. But at the end of 2019, Karen and Sylvester, 41, took a hard look at their finances and decided to make a change. They sold both of their homes in California (they lived in one and rented out the other), used $14,000 from their savings to buy an RV off of Facebook Marketplace in early 2020 and started traveling around the U.S.......

I have opted out of the cabin and picked up a CVT tent for my 99 Landrover. I have it all strapped up and will be taking it on it's maiden voyage this weekend to Horning's Hideout for an easy trial run.

For the rest of the summer I am looking to do some drive in hiking. Anybody have any suggestions for places where I can park and sleep for free (or a parking fee) where there is also a hiking loop? There are probably a thousands of places in Oregon but I'm indecisive and I haven't found any good sources online for what I'm looking for.

I'm pretty sure you can sleep in rest stops.

This is what I'm working with, except I turned the whole thing 90° so the ladder comes off the driver's side. Rest stops would work, but I was thinking more off the beaten path. Usually I'd would just go up breitenbush, but it's closed from the fires.

For God's sake, man, take the ladder down before you go on your trip. Here's a tip, fold up the tent before traveling.
There use to be cabins at Breitenbush that you could rent, are they also gone?

I'll be sure to stow everything carefully before I start my travels.

Some are and some aren't apparently. The road is technically open but I'm pretty sure it's just log trucks and machinery going up and down it right now.

Yeah, very clean. I usually try not to take a shit in public restrooms, but had to take one on my last trip. Death Valley needs one more rest area.
I've learned the hard way that when nature calls you'd better listen.

Love rest areas. Used to drive from Seattle to LA all the time. Tax money well spent!
One of the thing I found interesting while road tripping is how each state approaches their rest areas. Oregon has very good freeways but the rest areas are pretty meh. A surprising number of states (Mid West and South in particular) have unspeakably shitty highways but their rest areas are Taj Mahals for travelers. They keep them manned, heated (or air conditioned) and spotless, with plenty of travel info readily available. They actually make you want to stick around (rather than get back on shitty roads that beat your car to death). You can’t help but wonder why they don’t put some of that money back into their roads……but then, these are the folks who voted for Trump and think COVID and the vaccine are government conspiracies………all that said, nice photo of the Baldock rest area (south of Wilsonville) that Sly posted above……..

Arizona has nice highways and outhouses for some of their border rest areas.

Alabama has great highways. Never used their rest areas nor Georgia's rest areas. Georgia also has very nice highways. Side roads in both states can be deplorable.

How long of hikes? How far from Portland are you wanting to get?

I don't really have a specific distance. Something that can be done in a day. I am actually more near Salem, but anywhere within an hour or two would be ideal. Think weekend trips.

There are all sorts of hikes as you head up between Detroit and the Santiam junction. Duffy lake, Pamela trail head Lots of areas out there you can set up and camp then go do a hike. Could always do day hikes along the PCT also. Here is a link to a couple that sounds good.
