The 2015 Nobel Prize for Courage was awarded to Caitlyn Jenner for “fostering awareness and acceptance of the transgender community”, read a statement released by the prize committee. “By demonstrating the courage and valor of the human spirit, Caitlyn Jenner embodies the universal, honorable, and truthful pursuit of following one’s convictions in the face of adversity.”
Jenner, best known as a television personality and former Olympic athlete, transitioned from Bruce to Caitlyn in May 2015, an event widely publicized to promote a reality television series.
In July 2015, Jenner received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, urging acceptance for members of the transgender population, especially teens. Reaction to the courage award was mixed. Some called Jenner brave, while others labeled the award choice “a crass exploitationplay.”
Jenner hopes the public’s response to the Nobel Prize will be positive, and looks forward to increasing the visibility of transgendered persons, and bringing to light issues they face to a global audience.
The award, the first of its kind, reflects a world in which diversity has become more mainstream than fringe, but was not the only controversial Nobel decision. This year’s peace prize was given to the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet, and not awarded to Pope Francis, the expected recipient.
Reports that the Pope’s decision to meet with Kentucky clerk Kim Davis removed or disqualified him from prize consideration were denied by members of the committee. Representatives from the Vatican declined comment.
