Hospitals are experiencing tremendous losses due to the COVID-19 response.

Statewide, upwards of 40,000 hospitals beds were made available in anticipation of a patient surge, according to the California Hospital Association.

That necessary response, however, is not without a debilitating cost.

“They’re devastating,” CHA CEO Carmela Coyle said. “While there have been fiscal challenges before in health care, fiscal challenges before in the California economy, these are unprecedented times—we have never experienced anything like this.”
