The state's largest doctor group is calling for legalization of marijuana, even as it pronounces cannabis to be of questionable medical value.

Trustees of the California Medical Assn., which represents more than 35,000 physicians statewide, adopted the position at their annual meeting in Anaheim late Friday. It is the first major medical association in the nation to urge legalization of the drug, according to a group spokeswoman, who said the larger membership was notified Saturday.

Dr. Donald Lyman, the Sacramento physician who wrote the group's new policy, attributed the shift to growing frustration over California's medical marijuana law, which permits cannabis use with a doctor's recommendation. That, he said, has created an untenable situation for physicians: deciding whether to give patients a substance that is illegal under federal law.

I watched Cheech and Chong this weekend and a line in there cracked me up because we are saying the same thing now as they did in 1980.

"Weed is gonna be legal in a few years, you know?" (Cheech and Chong - Next Movie)

Btw, if it's ever legalized I think Portland could have that Amsterdam type of vibe to it! We already have the only weed cafe in the country.

Everyone's afraid to criticize the legal system because they might get calls in the night from the police intelligence unit.

Pot is more or less legalized. All one has to do is go to a dope friendly doctor, say they get headaches and they are given the right to get and stay high for life. My ex brother in law did it- and he doesn't get headaches. Now, he sold his plumbing business, he's high from waking and all the day long, living off the government and will do so until he dies.

But, of course, we have to tax the rich to ensure his lifestyle.

You think it's safe to perform a "portland weed cafe" google search at work? :pimp: Anyway, I had forgotten about that from a couple of years ago. Found the Oregonlive article and it originally opened on 7th and Dekum no less! 10 years ago a weed cafe on 7th an Dekum wouldn't have lasted a week, before it was robbed and cleaned out. lol. I see the cafe is now located on 82nd though. Interesting.

Are you saying weed caused an otherwise responsible business owner to sell his business and become a welfare dependent? Or did he already have some potential towards that end? This is an honest question btw.

you can always tell the weed addicts by the semen stains all over their clothing. these occur when they chronically masturbate, because they are too lazy to find a rape victim

Those stupid doctors and their 12 years of college think they know more than we do.

If we're going to legalize it we need to tax it.

no we don't.

fuck vice taxes.

marijuana is a plant. you can grow it on your own. how are you going to tax something that is easily growable with simple seeds.

You can easily make gin in your bathtub to avoid paying liquor taxes, but you don't, do you?

The idea of watching a 9-and-a-half minute video on what the bible says about weed made me laugh.

He was a very good plumber and was making good money. But he finally got tired of dealing with crooked contractors (often not getting paid after a job as a sub), whinny ass Californian home owners (bitch bitch bitch and then want the work for free)... sold his business, stashed the money, went to a pot doctor complaining of headaches (he laughs about it) and was given some authorization for pot. For the last two years he's been pretty much high whenever I see him and he's living off the government. I don't know what he did with the money from the business or how much he made selling it, but he has a killer boat, pickup and trailer now. Keeps it at my ex's place in Milwaukie.

What if there was a plant that could do all the following: is free and can grow anywhere, is non-toxic, provide food rich in high quality protein and several other nutrients, can be used to make a pleathora of high quality long lasting textiles (fabric, paper, rope, composite and building materials, etc.), is a bio fuel, and treat and even cure a pleathora of ailments and diseases? What if? If there was, then I am sure it would probably be made illegal...

Even if it was poisonous like Alcohol it should not matter. It is a shame we lose so many lives in the Drug War.
