The HCP needs your help.
So after having pretty slow/the same internet for the past 5 years, I finally decided to go into Comcast and A) ask them how fast or slow my internet speed was and B) either get faster or move to some other carrier.

Sat down and they said I had 10mbs speed. Thats slow right?

So for the same price they offered me 75mbs speed. They didn't want me to move elsewhere.

So shit, I'll take internet that's 7X faster for the same price!

They also said I'm paying $10 a month to rent my router.

I guess what I need is for you guys to give me some recommendations for a router to buy. Have know idea how to shop for one or even what to look for.

Also, is 75mbs good enough for me and my family? Biggest thing we use it for is Netflix, AppleTV. Son plays PS4 every now and then. Thats it really.

Are your renting just the modem or is it a combo modem plus WiFi router?

If you are just renting the modem and have your own WiFi router already then you can get a cheap modem like this that will work (ARRIS SURFboard SB6141): Amazon product ASIN B00AJHDZSI
Otherwise, if you need the Modem/Router combo then here is one that will do the job (ARRIS SURFboard SBG6782-AC): Amazon product ASIN B00GJ7Y7MU

Yep. Thats usually the router type i buy. So much better than renting from comcast. I used one for like 6 years with no issues. Leasing a modem from comcast is throwing money away.

75mbps should be plenty. However, the pricing/rates of Comcast are a known racket. You'll still experience slowdown, but only if every device in the house is streaming HD content and it's peak hours (i.e. 5-10pm).

I have one of them there surfboard modems that is a few years old and an Asus ac1900 router (I think, it's dual band and has lots of antennas but I'm no geek)

Everything is lightning fast, only Amazon HD looks a little low definition for the first few seconds but I've read that is normal.

I am renting the Comcast box everything plugs into.....but we have our own wifi box. Wish I knew the proper terminology.

I expected much more help from you boys...... Looks like I have to buy a modem? Thats the comcast box the the cables go into right? We have a netgear wifi box it looks like. Whatever you guys think would help make it the fastest.....

...I recently downgraded to 75Mbps with Comcast a couple months ago, but I consistently get well over that. Like right now during peak hours this was my speedtest.net result:

Whatever you decide, buy your own modem. I bought ours (forget what model, but it was a pretty well rated one) for at most $100, 5 years ago. It is still going strong. If we rented, that would have been $600+.

Crap! I might have to buy my own modem! Is it easy to set up/switch from Comcast's modem to the Arris modem?

I'm looking at my Comcast bill and I dont see a charge for modem rental. Hmmmm.

I just looked at my bill and chatted with a Comcrap agent. I'm not being charged a modem lease fee even though I have their modem.

You will be now! I hope they thanked you for alerting them of their mistake. :)

They better not! ha ha!
I'm actually still chatting with them online right now and getting a refund for a digital adapter box that I have but havent used in a long time. I'm playing dumb, saying I dont have any extra boxes so they are going to refund me the $$ I've been paying on it each month.

50/50 is $44.99.

My homeowners' association cut a deal with Verizon. A portion of our HOA dues pays for internet and TV. It didn't cost much to upgrade the 50/50 to 150/150.

Verizon FIOS got bought by Frontier Communications.

150/150 is $64.99.

I do a lot of software development that requires both uploading and downloading of big files or lots of files. The $20 extra is well worth waiting less for those uploads/downloads.

For you, 50/50 is plenty.

They do have Frontier in the PDX area, no?
