Cally and a 1st and 2nd for St. Louis

Jason Pominville wasn't asking the Rangers for 8 years $7.5m and then "settling" for 6 years $6.5m and never getting 55 pts in a season

Callahan trade value was low because of his INSANE contract demands. Sather did just fine here. St Louis only wanted to play in NY but Yzerman still has to get good value back as the guy is still a 30-35 goal scorer

he got potentially 2 first round picks for a player who wanted out and only would go to one team.

Nobody was going to trade for Callahan while giving up something major because his demands were publicly known and utterly ridiculous. It's no surprise that the teams Sather allowed to talk to Callahan (CBJ) were quickly out of the picture once they spoke to him. The only way Sather was going to get something back that was worth it was adding something to the pot.

It becomes 2 first round picks if we made the ECF. If we're in the ECF why in the world are you worried about draft picks that wont help for a few years to come?

So do we root for the Rangers to go on a deep run or lose early to keep the 1st? :)

I get what you're saying Al, but this team as gathered enough youth, i would have rather gave the 2014 1st if 2015 is deep as people are saying. This team has to make solid moves and MSL is one of them, it was a lot to give but worth it. Hopefully sather is working the buttons on something else, swap a couple of lower players log jammed at 3rd and 4th line, plus this is now AV's team, change is apparent.

Miller and McIlrath ready, Duclair and Skjei soon, Fast Lindberg and Kristo playing very well in the AHL....why do we need to keep stockpiling kids here?

On the other hand, can someone please name me good 1st round draft picks by the Rangers in the past 30 years. Leetch, Kovalev and Stall. That's it! Krieder is a rookie, we will see. Who else?

We get it 2009, the Rangers are the worst run organization in the history of professional sports around the world.

love how Miller and McIlrath are ready...really...there is READY and ...we hope they can handle it.
Duclar is playing in the Q he is a couple of years and a lot of lb's before we can count on him.
Fast and Kristo are small, so is Duclair for that matter

Lindberg...hopefuly he is ready we will need a good centerman next season as Moore and Boyle should be gone

that is more on the idiots drafting and not the fact they don't have picks to make

so your solution is to draft more kids who would take even longer to be ready? Im not seeing your point with that post.

my point is trading potentially 2 first rounders does not help us down the road. There will be a point in time where we would need to get a top 5 pick, trading two 1st rounders or multiple picks including a 1st would be the way to go.

Yes giving up the 20th pick is not horrible...but unless we win, we will never get to the next level because we get average players through the draft

Ok well there's our disagreement, if you want to worry about "down the road" so much then I understand you hating this deal. I think that we need to start worrying about the "now" because our goalie who is the backbone of this team is on the wrong side of 30 and our best forward wont be in his prime forever. Agree to disagree.

I was in favor of being a seller but only because I didn't think IMPACT players would be available and the Boston game was horrible.

I see the "The time is now" argument though. We just gave Hank 7/60. We have a good mixture of youth and players in their prime. Lets make a run.

Prod, if we don't make another move, do you really feel this team can win the cup?

This year its possible but I honestly dont think so.

But buying out Richards this offseason and using his money on a scoring winger with some real size (or a C with size as some want) will bring us much closer to that goal, as well as Big Mac and Miller ready to contribute.

This move gives us a solid 3 or 4 year window to get something going here. The picks you are talking about (late first rounders) won't be impact players for 5 or so years, 4 at best.

If St Louis was a UFA in July and was lukewarm about playing here I wouldn't like the move. He has another year and by all indications, unlike Capt Delusional, he will resign in the $5m range.

St Louis LIKELY has 3 good seasons left. Fits our window perfectly, takes Hank to 35/36

Yes Dis, I say he gets a 2 yr/5m per deal after this one expires. That gives him 4 years in NY, including this year. And unlike Capt Delusional, he WANTS to be here and wont hold out for a randsom

Prodigy, I am not criticizing. I was talking with my friend and he asked me that questions. I am serious, besides Stall, Leetch and Kovalev did we draft a solid first rounder? If we didn't then who cares if we give up 1st round draft picks 3 years in a row, right? I am being serious. My friend made a good point.

then I take it back 2009. I didnt really want to make that argument but it's true, who cares if we give up first rounders if we've missed on them more than we've hit

Exactly, we went back to 1990 and those were the only 3 really that are solid. You could make a case for Del Zotto but in the end we gave him up for Klien who is ok.

1st round picks have been crappy. But we have gotten some great 2nd, 4th and 7th (lundqvist).

Kreider is going to be a great player. JT Miller will be good

Yup, plus McIlrath was a 1st rounder, Staal was a 1st rounder. Cherepanov, who had great potential was a 1st rounder.

2009 and his friends need to brush up on hockey.

The deal was a no brainer. The contract Callahan was demanding was ridiculous for what he produces. I'd much rather have St. Louis for this season and then at $5 million for one more year than to get tied up in another bad long term contract.

I'm glad he's playing tonight. I'm calling at least one goal for him tonight as he will be pumped up.

The Rangers usually lose these games when something big happens.

I'm disappointed...
I think Cally priced himself out of a prestigious position of Captain in New York.
I think we should not have given up a first rounder pick...ugh!

Cally was heart and soul but he is not an elite player. I wanted him as a Ranger, but he should have been more realistic about his value.

I don't think he will get 6 years at 6 million plus from anyone.
