Camby a disappointment?

Before Camby played his first game for us, a Clipper fan told me that Camby is a great rebounder, but overrated on defense. That seems accurate so far.

Too small of a sample size. We've seen that it takes older players some time to get with the program. Andre, Howard, so I'm not suprised he hasn't had a huge impact. I'm more excited about his game than Howard. Juwan is solid and playing his role well. But by playoff time Camby should be much more the impact player.

It's strange seeing him in a Blazer uniform though. I can't picture Camby not wearing a bright blue Nuggets jersey. Hard to see him as one of us.

Defensively, yes. Offensively, we've been terrible so far with Camby on the floor.
I simply disagree. Our offense has looked just as good if not better with Camby on the floor.

Howard is not as good as Camby in those areas, but to call him terrible is a gross overstatement.

Howard is one of the worst defenders/rebounders for a PF/C that I have seen play in the NBA this season.

Has been known for it in the past, but certainly not yet in the time since he's been here. Howard also does a better job of facilitating offense than Camby has (so far).

While I will concede that Camby hasn't hit his jumper, I do have to say that I think Camby is doing just as well at facilitating the offense as Howard does. Especially when you consider he hasn't been running the offense for very long.

In general, most of what you've said here seems based on what Camby's done elsewhere, and we expected to see from him here, not what he's actually done as a Blazer.

The only thing I said that was based on what Camby has done elsewhere is that he has the ability to hit a jumper.

He makes the ocassional big play on defense or rebounding or blocking a shot, but I've been disappointed with his defense plenty of other times as well. I've attributed some of those plays as learning and fitting in with the other players and the defensive scheme (IOW not always his fault). His offense not very good.

I'm not really 'disappointed' because so far he is exactly what I expected. I never bought into the hype that this was a slam dunk trade for the best defending rebounding shot blocking locker room saint glue guy in the league. I'm hopefully optimistic that he will contribute to any playoff success we have more than the two guys who went out. The fact is, we needed a center and it looks like was the best we could do, so I'll take it. But the level of hype for him coming in was bound to leave a lot of people disappointed.

Yes, I agree with that. I actualy thought he should play behind Howard when I first heard of the trade, but I don't think so anymore (even though I still REALLY like Howard's game) partly because Camby looks better with every game and partly because he's much better in winning the tip-off.

Before Camby got here I got some fair amount of grief (not necessarily in here) for suggesting that his career has shown him to gamble for blocks and focus on rebounds to the detriment of good defense (and that he's spent much of his career injured).

I don't want to be misunderstood -- I think Camby was a valuable and necessary pick up. Just not worthy of the hype. And we all know how the fans can turn on a player who doesn't live up to unrealistic hype.

My comment on this thread is that if Camby has been a disappointment to you, you had unrealistic expectations of him.

My comment on this thread is that if Camby has been a disappointment to you, you had unrealistic expectations of him.

It was unrealistic to expect that he might hit a few 15-footers? It was unrealistic to expect him to score at a clip similar to what Juwan Howard has provided? It was unrealistic to expect a PER higher than Martell's?

I could see how someone could have had realistic expectations and still be disappointed thus far. :dunno:

For the season, Camby's averaging 7.3 ppg, 11.6 reb, and 2 blocks. Throwing out the Nets and Raptors games that he had the sprained ankle, he's averaged 4.2 ppg, 9.2 rpg, and 3 blocks in five games for the Blazers. Given the small sample size and the fact that he's still settling in, I just can't see getting too disappointed over minor offensive downturns from a guy that's just not going to be expected to do much but rebound and be a defensive presence. But, I guess each is entitled to their own evaluation of disappointment.

I'd like to see him get some more minutes. He's only hit the 30 minute mark twice so far, and hasn't been in foul trouble. C'mon Nate - keep your best players on the court!

I've been fine with Camby. But I think he is one of those guys that will get better over time. As soon as he learns the system, what is being asked of him out there. He will improve over time.

I'm trying not to judge Camby right now. I think we were gonna make the playoffs with or without him. What I'm hoping is that he'll put us over the top IN the playoffs in a way that neither Travis, Blake, or Juwan would've been able to. I look forward to watching him block Andrew, Pau, & Kobe and I look forward to 20 rebound performances in key games. He has Finals experience and I think we will see that when the chips are on the table.

I know that lots of people want to avoid the Lakers but I really really want them. I think we can take them and I think our players think we can take them.

Go Blazers

He doesn't have much time. He was brought here specifically to help us in the last 2 months of the season, plus playoffs. So he must hit the ground running. Even in the unlikely event that he re-signs with us, at age 35, we don't have time to grant him the same learning curve as a beginner, and we shouldn't have to.

He can hit the 15 footer, I've watched him do it for years. Thats just not the way this particular teams offense works.

I know he's capable of it; he just hasn't done it here yet.

This particular team's offense has had Juwan Howard hitting the 15 footer from the center position all year. How is it that the offense worked that way for him, but not Camby?

Before Camby - Portland #17 in defensive efficiency
After Camby - Portland #15 in defensive efficiency

Nice jump given the small number of games he played.

11 days later - and the Blazers are now up to #13 in defensive efficiency.

I think it is pretty clear that Camby, while offensively still somewhat out of sync - is far from a disappointment given his rebounding and defense - the areas he was brought in to handle.

Go Blazers.

I am disappointed that he wasn't this good earlier. I blame Nate McIdiot - clearly he was holding him back. Probably by playing Blake earlier in the season.

I'm very disappointed. After the chant during the OKC game last night and Paul Allen repeating the chant a couple of times in the back hallway, his price just went up 2 million a year.

very disappointed too ;) geez some people here...

just wanted to add to this that Batum's return probably isn't hurting the Blazer defense either

I was gonna post this but i knew i would get shit. He has been very average to below average since arriving. He misses easy shots, his jumper isnt falling at all, and his blocking of shots has been greatly exaggerated.

So far Im not at all impressed. If Joel can come back healthy... we do not need camby imo.

QUICK TO JUDGE AND WRONG AS USUAL!

is this thread serious????????????????? without this guy we are fighting with houston for 8th seed.

CAMBY HAS BEEN BRILLIANT ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

 MIXUM

Not even bright enough to find the shift button or realize this has been bumped! Classic!

Leave Mixxer alone . . . he's still all E'ed out from the spinning at the rave last night.

What's the point of this? I was disappointed with what we saw out of Camby the first two weeks. Since then, I have been very pleased and impressed. Mixum could say the exact same. What's wrong with that?

The first few weeks Camby was on the team, he was about what I expected. Lately, he's really begun to fit into the scheme and assert himself more. In the past couple of weeks Camby has exceeded my expectations.
