So what do you guys think? Will Larry Brown be able to change Marbury into his type of point guard, or will they eventually have to part ways?
IMO, Marbury isn't going to last in the Larry Brown reign. I don't see either of them submitting to the other.
We all know what Larry Brown wants out of his point guard. He stresses that the point guard should direct the team and only look to score when his team requires it. Brown is always hardest on his point and has expected the most of out them. Players like Rod Strickland, Mark Jackson, Eric Snow, and Chauncey Billups have all flourished under his system.
I think Marbury will not work under Brown because of his game and his ego/attitude.
Marbury is a scoring point guard, not the type that Brown likes. Despite having one of his best statistical seasons last year, he still held the ball too long, didn't play defense, and looked for his own shot first. Brown has tried to use Marbury before and everyone knows about their problems during the Olympics. Now you can point out how Brown was able to work with Billups and Iverson, who were similar to Marbury, but there's a difference. Billups had yet to prove himself as a NBA-calibre guard. He was desperate and proved to be willing to change his game for Brown. Iverson was even more like Marbury, and eventually Brown decided that he needed to play him at the 2 to make the team successful.
And that's where Marbury attitude and ego come in. I don't think Marbury is willing to change his game for anybody. He's played for many coaches, but has always played the same style of ball. Unlike Billups, Marbury is an All-Star. No matter what someone thinks of his game, he will always have a place in the NBA, and he knows it. Brown can work with his guard, but he needs a player who buys into his system. I just don't see Marbury responding well to Brown's nagging and strict coaching methods. The other option is to play Marbury at the 2 like Iverson, but I doubt that will work. Marbury has already proclaimed himself the "best point guard in the NBA." Also, the Knicks are already set at the 2 and moving Marbury there would be a waste.
In the end, I think Isiah bringing in Brown will lead to Marbury being traded. Brown huge contract shows that he has a lot of say in how the team is going to be run. Despite Isiah trying to build a run n' gun team, Brown won't keep Marbury around if he doesn't change the way he plays.
