49ers hired ex-NFL safety John Lynch to a 6 year contract as GM.
The move comes entirely out of left field, as beat writers were convinced the 49ers would choose from Terry McDonough (Cardinals), George Paton (Vikings), and Mark Dominik (ESPN). Lynch has no background in personnel evaluation. He retired in November of 2008 following a 15-year playing career, and has spent the last eight and a half years as a color commentator for FOX. Lynch's work in the broadcast booth was terrific and confirmation he is a bright football mind, but it is extremely rare for NFL teams to hire analysts to run organizations. The 49ers will hope Lynch works out better than Matt Millen, whom the Lions hired out of a similar broadcasting role to be their GM in 2001.

I have heard Lynch will be a glorified scout. Shanahan will really be doing Lynch's job.

I think this was the only way to get Shanahan to come. They essentially had to throw the kitchen sink at him and tell him he was also basically the GM as well. Shows you how far they have fallen to have to beg someone to take the job. And a 6 year contract for a first time GM (in name only in this case) is unheard of. This was a power grab by Shanahan. He didn't want to have to answer to any of the other GM candidates that the 9ers interviewed because they actually had experience as assistants GMs and you know, kinda would have known what the heck they were doing and might override him.

This team is going to be a dumpster fire for years like the Browns and Bills.

A lot of his success will depend on his scouting department. Who knows maybe he's got some keen eye for spotting college players who are going to be studs?

Supposedly they are going to hire someone who has some experience to fill the Director of Player Personnel position. My question is why didn't they just hire that guy to be GM then? But I know the answer. It goes back to Shanny not wanting to have to answer to anyone and wanting to essentially be the GM too.

hopefully they get fired after one year, and then next year they hire 2 guys to 6 year deals, and they get fired after one year, and so on, until the league forces the yorks to sell because they are bankrupt from paying fired executive salaries.

Federal government to bailout 49ers soon.

And they burn the new stadium down, and move the team back to San Francisco.

A six year contract to a guy who's never held a front office job of any kind?! Derp deep derp derp...... Elway basically ran an AFL team so it's not like his hiring is similar. The Niners are owned by a trust fund baby who doesnt know shit about football.

It appears Shanny will be the one doing the real GM duties and Lynch is going to be his admin lol

Go Hawks

I'm so glad that I have switched over to the Titans. I love me some Marcus Mariota, but the organization is simply better run. JRob is a pimp.

Down here at least the Raiders were the local team played on CBS every week, hopefully with them moving to Vegas a team like Tennessee could move into that slot so we wouldn't have to pay a bunch of money for Sunday ticket to see Mariota.

But I like just getting it through my tv antenna, and I'm too lazy to plug my tv into my computer all the time unless I'm playing a game with a controller.

Don't bandwagon dude. Without disappointment you can't truly appreciate greatness. Tell me about it. I'm a Blazer fan!

How is it bandwagonning if I started following the Titans last year when they were complete shit? I have a closer connection with Mariota than I do with the Niners right now, and the front office/ownership is like cancer.
