Can we have positive threads?

I think when you any negative reaction during a loss is fine. When we lose, it's natural for a bunch of "heat of the moment" type banter. But the "Fire Olshey, Fire Stotts, Burn the World to the Crowd" type threads really don't do anything. They just allow for more hand ringing (which we really don't need.) But I am also not going to live with some false hope that we are suddenly going to balance the roster, get under the cap and add a couple of awesome players via deadline swapping. Unrealistic hopes without any sense of reason become sad after a while. I'm more for like of the opinion that the organization has to make the best decisions with the limited options available. Time will eventually remedy the Blazers problems and we have that.

Einstein famously had 2 definitions of time.

1. Cyclic Time (C), in which the past repeats forever.

2. Firing Some People Time (FU), in which bad things stop repeating.

If I recall my textbook correctly, the equations are

0 = mC²
and
∞ = mC² + FU

where m = deadwood Mass of roster + management, which is yet another equation to solve. Further work is needed (i.e. funding).

I would love to read more positive threads. I know that I read and post much less when it is all so negative. But, I understand the negativity. We have a bit of a flawed roster, and wins are going to be a 50/50 battle on most nights. I don't personally delve into that pool of negativity on most occasions, but have voiced my concerns from time to time. I hate to say that @HCP was right, when he warned against unrealistic expectations before the season, but he was right. In the face of that, I will still choose to get super excited and Homerish about the team before every season, dammit! I'm good at dealing with disappointments, so I'm good to go.

Jesus Christ, Jlprk. I know about the Cyclic Model. I was just trying to be.... positive. :drumroll:

I personally have taken a huge step back in terms of following sports. I think it has been better for my own mental health. I started to look at, on balance, the amount of joy that I get out of sports compared to the overall pain and frustration. It's not a very good ratio.

Ducks
Blazers
Niners

Those three teams over the last five years have completely fallen apart. I just took a step back. Now I just follow at arms length, much more casual. I love talking trades and free agents and draft picks. Not going to get caught up in the micro of sports and focus more on the macro. Seems to have worked better for me.

You've got Jimmy G now. Time to get back on the Niners hardcore, bro!

I barely post here and never make threads. I seem to only read about the negatives going on with the team. I'm all most to the point I don't need the negativity in my life.

It's just a thought that I'd throw out there. If I'm out of line just delete this thread.

I'm actually excited anout the trade deadline coming up. Ill be shocked if nothing happens to the roster.

If I believe nothing happens to the roster by dead line Stotts is gone by Summer and new coach with lottery draft. What's your thoughts on that?
dont get me wrong, but this is virtual life, so I dont know why you take it so seriously...

Yeah, I have been passively following the Titans and Niners this season. It's hard to watch Titans games in Portland. Playoffs should be fun. I hope they change their coaching staff. The Niners actually have a great front office/coaching staff though.

Not what I was saying. I was talking about when the trade happened. Did Olshey think back then he was upgrading the roster, or just picking up a project and a first for someone they didn’t want to pay.
I honestly think Neil made that trade for Zach Collins. He needed the draft asset to move up.

I don't think the problem is negativity. I think it's that some people see a problem and say something, while others see the exact same thing and see no problem. Some people want, and expect results immediately, or at least sooner than later. Others are much more patient. Some people demand excellence, while others are cool with simply sneaking in the playoffs each year.

Some might think Fire Olshey or Stotts is a negative thread, but others might think it's a positive thread because they want better for their team. Trade CJ is negative to some and positive to others. Complaining about the offense, complaining about the roster, complaining about the front office or coaching staff, complaining about the draft, whatever. Those who complain just want what all fans want, a championship. Some call it complaining, some call it passionate.

To me the issue is two groups of people who approach things differently. Take Meyers, no seriously, will you take Meyers? Some look at him and think he sucks, some early on in his career. Others look at him and see an athletic freak who can stretch the floor. Then you have some poster posting how he sucks, and others bashing that poster, or some poster saying how well he is going, and others bashing that poster.

No one likes to be tild tgey are wrong, and it's much easier to do that on a forum than face to face

As always, I'm not sure I've really said anything, but I hope I have because it siunded great in my semi complete brain.

I just remember people being adamant right up until the end that LMA was coming back. And I remember getting shitted on for suggesting that he was leaving. But to me, there's a balance between ONLY being negative, ONLY being positive, and being somewhere in between.

I know I'm overly negative because of the false positive threads. The "if we win the next 47 games in a row we'll have home court advantage" bull shit threads

But it's a pointless crusade. You're not going to change the overly positive people any more than they're going to change the overly negative people. I just stop reading the people I write off as basically a one trick account.

You are doing it correctly. I'm not there yet, and realize I'm part of the problem

This passive aggressive shot at a poster trying to be transparent about issues with something we all like means you are part of the problem too
Not passive-aggressive at all. I was acknowledging and appreciating your willingness to admit your contributions to that which you despise, by (apparently too subtly) referencing the age-old axiom that the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. I'm sorry you interpreted it as a shot--it was not intended that way in the least.

However, if you have any other examples of me being part of the problem, feel free to bring them to my attention so that I can re-evaluate my activities here.

Hey, Riverman is that a picture of Stotts?

WTH? You come on here asking for positive threads and then you predict the coach will be fired and the team will miss the playoffs??!! :)

If you only are happy if your team wins, then you're basically making a bet with yourself at the start of every game; the wager is three fucking hours of your day and the rest of the night stewing over the loss versus three hours well spent and enjoyment chatting about the game afterwards. With some teams this is a good bet, but others it's a bad bet.

With the Blazers, right now it's a sucker's bet because even when they win, it's ugly and lucky, so you get not enjoyment out of watching them play the game and at the end you're still not happy about the team.

This is 2012 all over again. I just wish Allen would pull the damn trigger and do something because I'm tired of waiting for the other shoe to drop.

You're fine and one of the most kind and fair people here.
