The weak US dollar really hurt Canada exports and increased consumption of US products. Is hard being an entrepreneur in Canda?

well the US dollar and Canada dollar enjoy or regrettably are on parity. however, i think that only hurts retailers and the manufacturing sector. canada as the writer rightly suggests suffers from an ingenuity deficit. honestly, every crazy arse nerd i know moved to america as soon as they could because they felt like they were being held back "the glass ceiling" - particularly professionals of colour

From the many times I've been to various cities in Canada I can sense a racist undertone. I remember riding on a shuttle up to Whistler and the bus driver kept complaining about all the "orientals" moving to Vancouver making the price for housing too expensive. He went on and on about it and said they steal jobs because they will work for cheaper and only shop from their own kind.

I guess Canada's system and Europe's system does work for people who like structure and want a general sense of job security.

I think the ingenuity deficit in Canada is probably a direct result of the strong unions you have. Technology and ingenuity means less manual jobs available for them.

There's a lot of that going on in the USA too especially in the transportation sector and the docks. All the ingenuity has been shipped out into China and they have taken full advantage of technology & ingenuity to dominate importing and exporting. I'm not sure what the ratio is now, but a couple of years ago China could ship out 100 to 1 shipping containers versus the US based on technology developed in the US.

well the anecdote u mentioned to me reflects just some natural occuring antagonisms between imagined, disparate races. in canada white dudes complain while in the US u guys have revitalized the minutemen to hunt down mexicans. shit happens!!!

as for the unions- i posted the article because it dispels the old ass excuses of disincentives hampering business-like unions, burdensome taxes, etc instead focusing on the lack of ingenuity as a consequence of the failure of canadian business. i speculate its because the old vanguard has stubbornly refused to include new blood into their companies leadership. there are other reasons obviously like a very small population which works against promoting economies of scale. also, canada has resource extraction fixation; a byproduct of our geographical serendipity but we need to be more forward looking.

That reminds me of a study I read about, where they tested employers with identical resumes (credentials-wise) and found that candidates with "ethnic-sounding" names had less chance of getting a call-back.

As for Shape, I think you'll find the Vancouver area's especially bad for that. There's a huge number of minorities there (since its right by the Pacific coast), but they're very segregated communities, each sticking to their own suburban regions and distrusting others.
