So predictable. Anything those clowns on 1080 or 95.5 say about Roy's situation get posted immediately, but no one posts first hand quotes from Roy about his knee.

Some excerpts here, but read the whole thing at the link.

"Whether it’s been in college coming off the bench, or in the NBA dealing with an ankle injury or a hamstring. You just have to adjust out on the court. The knee will hopefully calm down. I think it’s just flared up. After talking to the doctor, he was like 'you seem to come to me every year during the first month of the season to talk about this.' Then it settles down. That’s where we’re hoping it goes, that it settles down and I go back to playing my normal ways."

I’ve been noticing a lot of things getting a little more attention than maybe I thought they would when I said them. But, about wanting the ball more, I just wanted to be more of a facilitator. I thought I could help create more offense for this team. It was never meant to be taken in a bad way. I think that I can help this team with the ball more. It wasn’t to shoot more. It was never to say that I want to go out and shoot more. But, with the knee, it’s just a situation where my minutes were really high there. Me and coach talked about my minutes in July during the summer time. He said you know I really want to keep you at 35-36 minutes this year. When they started to get into the 40 range, I just wanted to remind him about it. My knee is something that we’ve kind of had to deal with for a couple of years here. It’s just trying to keep me healthy. We feel like this is the best way to keep me strong throughout an 82-game season.

I'm glad Barrett was able to get one last interview with Brandon before he died. Of lupus.

Well this does nothing to add to the general consensus that we are lottery bound - therefore I will choose to ignore it. I mean, what kind of source is Brandon Roy compared to Big Suke or Dwight Jaynes? I need more teeth gnashing!

sounds good....

no official results yet.... but obviously the big test will be this road trip and next few weeks. but from that interview... sounds like roy is gonna attempt to play through it. however should we have a shitty record by early december.... all bets are off. then those dreaded words could get thrown around.

You guys are soooo funny. Quit reading what Barrett wrote and learn to read between the lines.

This is what the smart fan gets from that fluff piece when analyzing it properly,

Roy wants the ball more especially right after having surgery.

Roy knew he needed knee surgery this summer but didn't want to be on crutches for his wedding.

And this next part really pissed me off,

"We feel like this is the best way to keep me strong throughout an 82-game season."

WTF Roy?!? 82 games? So now Roy thinks we're either not going to make the playoffs or if we do he doesn't want to play in them.

Un-F'ing-believable...

This is nice to hear. It sounds like it's not as serious as Quick made it out to be. I can sleep a little bit better now.

what words... micro-fracture? Haven't you already been throwing them around regarding Brandon?

I wish Roy would explain how he would become a better facilitator by running more ISO's?........Which he said he wanted to do. To me this interview is all about trying to repair Roy's slightly damaged image, and who better to do that than always unbiased MB.

yep, fluff piece

The Portland media is about lies, distortions, stirring the waters and flat our lousy reporting. From Crapzano to that peeping tom, Quick- the worst in the country. So when the player himself speaks, I pay attention a lot more.

and what did Roy tell "you" about his condition? he told me nothing that alleviates my bone on bone fears

Roy is the kind of source who has every reason to put a positive spin on the situation. He just signed a big contract, he doesn't want to disappoint the fans, and (most of all) he certainly doesn't want to admit to himself that his knee may be a problem that is getting worse.

I hope he's right, of course, but I'm also taking what he says with a grain of salt.

I'm afraid I have to agree with this.

It must be exhausting to see the dark side all of the time.

I sure was not aware the consensus is the Blazers are a lottery team. Guess no one asked for my vote, or noted that the Blazers (now facing already their 4th back to back, having played most games on the road, and without a center) are in, hmmm, first place?

Don't let facts get in the way....

I generally agree that MB often asks leading questions to paint people and situations in a positive light, but I couldn't find any such questions in this interview. And to be honest, Roy has historically oversold his injuries rather than obscure or gloss over them.

I don't think this is a fluff piece, but a rather candid interview with a guy whose situation is being blown up by the fishbowl that is Portland media.

That was said with tongue planted firmly in cheek, as I was not the one asking if our best hope for this year was a lottery pick. No Chicken Little here.

Agree. He needs to learn to become a MUCH better facilitator by drawing the defense to him and trusting his teammates to hit the shot.

true, but Quick Jaynes and other local media types have at least as good reason to stir shit up with negative spin as their $$$ are directly tied to how many hits their articles generate via advertising exposure. A Brandon Roy should be fine article doesn't have the same news breaking sizzle for the drama obsessed in the fan base. Since Brandon's dollars in this new max contract are of course guaranteed, it would be reasonable to argue that the local hacks motivation to be negative about things is actually much stronger then BR's to be positive.

salt for everyone!

How could he become more of a facilitator in iso situations?
Probably by attacking the rim then kicking out to the open man.

Not saying that is the perfect setup but this is almost certainly what B-Roy was thinking about.

B-Roy says what's on his mind regardless of who is interviewing him.
It's one of the things I appreciate about him.

You may not agree with what he says but you have to admit that not many athletes say much of anything at all.

Here's to hoping that B-Roy learns to deal with his knee problem by developing a post up game. I think he has the skills to be pretty devastating on the block.

I think that, whatever else may come, it's bizarre--and not necessarily a good thing--when your best player has to have his knee drained of fluid twice, and is for the first time that i can remember calling for limited minutes, very early in the season no less. It actually makes me feel worse that Roy paints this as a chronic issue rather than an acute ailment that could be remedied.

Can Always Trust B-Roy to be Honest, Candid, and humble. That's why he's our Star and I wouldn't trade him for anyone.

Knees are a very tricky thing, when I had surgery they told me hey your knee is fixed but you'll have pain the rest of your life, just the way it goes where there is only so much cartilage to go around

Brandon had knee issues coming into the draft... I recall at the time that being sited as why he fell as far as he did. In other words, his knee health issues played a part in him becoming a Blazer

You can see the video version of this tonight at halftime.

Thank you. The disadvantage of chat rooms is no facial expressions or tones of voice to indicate tongue in cheek, and yes, we are hearing the Blazers are doomed to lottoland.

I wouldn't call it bizarre at all. Roy got off to a slow start last seaon, too and the schedule was much easier. Last year, the Blazers first 8 games were spread out over 15 days, with only three games on the road, and not a single back-to-back. This year, the first eight games occurred over 13 days, with much more travel. The Blazers have played 5 road games and 3-back-to-backs, including two of the very unusual home/away back-to-backs, and a coast-to-coast flight from LA to NY. And, Roy's minutes are up. Note:. I only included the first eight games as that was when Roy asked for his minutes to be reduced (which they were in the Detroit game).

Simply put, he hasn't had any time to rest and recover between games. I'm not a professional athlete (no kidding, I'm not, really), but I regularly get swelling (fluid build-up) in my right knee and both ankles. The best cure, sit down, relax and elevate the feet and legs. With the hectic schedule, increased minutes, all the travel, and multiple back-to-backs, it's possible Roy's knee just hasn't had a chance to recover on it's own between games.

Granted, it's not a good thing, you'd prefer there was no swelling, but it's not necessarily the end of the world. As the schedule becomes less hectic, with more days off and fewer back-to-backs, Roy's knee may be just fine. Or, perhaps not. I'm not a doctor and we haven't heard one word from a licensed physician on the current condition of Roy's knee. I'd prefer to wait until we do before I suspect the worst. All we have so far are quotes from the patient and all sorts of random, unqualified speculation from the media and fans.
