Cap space-who does Neil want?

Rather have a max wing than monroe....oh, you say butler is available? :)

If Butler signs an offer with any team but the Bulls, he'd be doing the Bulls a favor. Right now, they can for sure lock him up for one year if he chooses the QO. Otherwise, they can and will match any offer, the shortest of which would lock him up for 3 years.

Isn't Monroe a lock to NY? I would not worry about getting him.

Interesting. As it stands right now, the Blazers would have to renounce the rights to their MLE ($5,464,000) to get to that $41.6M number. My guess is that Olshey will try to hold onto that chip. A potential scenario:
- Sign LaMarcus, $20,130,000
- Sign Monroe, $16,775,000
- Keep the MLE $5,464,000

That puts the Blazers about $1M over the available space. It just so happens that the #23 draft choice has a $1.1M CAP hold. If the Blazers traded it away for second rounders or future picks, it would allow them to keep the MLE.

I don't think you'll qualify for the MLE if you're more than MLE under the cap before signing Monroe.

Agreed. All the signing would have to be in place first, and the total committed salaries would have to be over the CAP for the MLE to apply. I'm guessing Olshey won't keep the Blazers under the CAP for long.

You can't get the MLE and sign a FA worth more than MLE with cap space. You only get the MLE if your salaries + cap holds + MLE is over the cap.

To be able to sign a max FA, you renounce Wes or whoever and you lose the MLE.

What you can use is the ROOM MID-LEVEL EXCEPTION

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q25

ROOM MID-LEVEL EXCEPTION -- This exception is available only to teams that drop far enough below the cap to use cap room, and lose their Bi-Annual, Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level and Taxpayer Mid-Level exceptions (see question number 26). This exception cannot be used if the team has already used the Bi-Annual, Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level or Taxpayer Mid-Level exceptions. This exception becomes available once the team salary drops far enough that the team loses its other exceptions

For 2015-16, the room exception is $2.814M

If you can get a legit third star, giving up MLE is well worth it IMO.

Your right. It looks like as soon as the Blazers use CAP space to sign a player, they lose the MLE. But it does look like the Room MLE of $2.8M applies.

The Bulls gave up the MLE to sign Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic last year. They used the room exception to sign Kirk Hinrich (blech).

Wright was signed with the Taxpayer MLE. For 2014-15, the exception was $3.278M. Wright's contract was for $3.15M.

EDIT:

Room Mid-Level Exception remaining: $2.7 million
Signed via cap space: Dorell Wright (two years, $6.1 million)

With all of the CAP holds in place for their free agents (currently putting the Blazer well above the CAP), what would stop the Blazers from first using the MLE (before they renounce anyone), and then renounce the players necessary for a CAP space signing? There must be some rule prohibiting that.

I don't think that works.

If we actually get DeMarcus Cousins, I should be given total control over this message board.

Well, by renouncing everyone, you open x amount of cap space. By signing someone to the mle, and then renouncing everyone, you'd have cap space-mle. So basically, it'd be the same as if you just signed the guy with space

I think Henderson will be great at the 2. Perfect off guard for Dame, slasher, can shoot and plays hard as hell on D (from what I've seen).

Apparently Hornets fans think he has terrible BBIQ.

He's got HOPS though, major HOPS. I think if he's coming off the bench, he's a solid rotation player. He's not a good shooter but the Blazers have been missing a slasher type player for awhile now. I say this pre-emptively but - better Will Barton perhaps?

If the Blazers are fielding a playoff contending roster next year I think Henderson is a good sleeper candidate to have a nice season.

It sucks losing Batum but I'm honestly more sad for sentimental reasons. Blake is now the only remaining player from the 08-09 season and if Aldridge doesn't re-up, it's going to stay that way. Ahhh, goodbye memories.

I don't think there is any question that he is still raw. A big at 19.......it may take another another 3 years. Remember Shawn Kemp at that age?

I was talking about Hendo, haha.

I don't know much about Vonleh. He looks like a nice prospect, good work ethic, etc etc. Hopefully he's going to be our Jermaine O'Neal.

Oh Shit sorry. I saw terrible BBIQ and assumed...............I never associate low BBIQ with Duke players. They don't always make it in the NBA but seldom is that an issue.

Henderson went to Duke, not a whole lot of idiots came out of Duke. He plays like a poor mans Drexler.

Call me crazy, but I think Neil wants Gerald Henderson and Noah Vonleh.

Sure, why not? Henderson is insurance in case Wes leaves or stays but doesn't recover well. Vonleh is slightly smaller Leonard, a big PF who has range out to three point land and defends better than average. And since he's black, MM can like him!
