So, I rear ended someone the other week and now the insurance is doing a total loss on my car.

Its a BAD market out there right now, but I need a car. Looking at probably getting a 2-3 year old civic, but prices are way inflated.

Anyone use any of the online spots: Carvana, Shift, Carmax or any other thoughts?

I have just what you need, a 2018 Civic.

How does $20,000 sound?

Mrs PokerDog is buying a new car right now.

What a fucking adventure, lol. Because of the chip shortage, we might be buying the car in Seattle or LA. We're talking to dealers in both.

Best way to buy a car, the Costco Auto Program.

Because of chip shortage, the car she wants has a $5,000 market adjustment. The Costco Auto makes the dealer take that off the price. The Seattle dealer she is talking to the Costco Auto program is $350 below MSRP. The LA is $500 below MSRP.

None of the other auto buying programs gets you close to that.

Can you afford to order from a manufacturer and wait? Honestly it's probably cheaper and a better deal.

The one damn time that we get to have the power... buying cars.... and it has been taken away from us. the Covid world sucks.

I won't have a car then. All the dealers are doing $3-5k markups in the area, the Kia/Hyundais are doing $10k.

The dealer here said they haven't been working with Costoco. I'll try to see how that is.

Buy new with Costco. Used is stupid money right now.

Her current car is a Kia Soul. She bought it in 2016 for $15,000k. We're selling it to a local Kia dealership for the current KBB price of $11,500. It has 80,000 miles. In a normal market that is maybe a $5,000 car.

I want to sell my car. I just shortened my commute down to 5 miles and don't need this extra payment. Want to buy a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder?

I probably need a small car. LA is harder with a big car + gas prices.

I just dread the whole dealer experience. They are such little shits over there.

You go on Costco's website (if you're a Costco member) enter the make and model and zip code you want to purchase in. They will tell you the Costco dealership for your area.

Sell it to a dealer. Go on KBB and see what it lists for, there is a section on the website right now asking if you want dealers to contact you to buy it.

I regret that I sold my 'extra' car a couple of years ago. Could probably get twice as much for it now.

Mrs PokerDog wants a Kia Niro Special Edition Hybrid. They're all $5k market adjustment on top of the MSRP. The Costco program eliminates that. There are no Costco affiliated Kia dealers in Portland right now so that's why we're looking in Seattle and LA. For a legit $5k savings we'll buy in Seattle or LA.

The Costco dealer in LA for Kia is Car Pros. But you have to go through Costco to get the discount.

You still have to go into the dealership and deal with the finance manager, etc. I guess maybe finance through a credit union or bank?

As long as you have good credit finance is easy.

We're buying the car on the Chase CC for the points and then financing it through OnPoint Credit Union when we get home.

She is on the phone with the dealer in Renton right now, lol.

I’ve done Costco twice for a new car and it’s the only way to go for a new ride. If you’re looking at used cars, I highly recommend Carmax. Their prices fair, their selection is incredible and they vet the cars they buy (most of which are fresh off the lease market). Best of all, you can do your shopping from the comfort of your own home. I had a very positive experience on the purchasing side. If you try to sell your car through them, they gouge the shit outta you. But that doesn’t appear to be an issue in your case. But like Sly says, Costco or Carmax are probably your best options at this particular time. And as I have said before in this forum, you can use Costco as leverage with non Costco dealers. It worked very well for me the last car purchase…

OK, talked to a costco dealer who called me after I submitted the info online.

They have Camrys at $350 under MSRP and no dealer markup. That will probably be better than buying used.

Best and easiest deal out there.

Is California offering any money if you buy hybrid or electric?

Purchased an Impreza for the wife about three months. I was surprised at the price we paid, as it was nearly the same price as when we were looking at Imprezas about 18 months prior. The dealer had similar used ones with 12-20K in miles, and they were nearly the same price as the new model. But.... the new model today at the dealer is nearly $3K more than we purchased ours for just three months ago.
