Maybe I don't get it, what did Casey say that was so bad? Seems like he just stated a fact.

Yeah, you might be jumping the gun on indicting Holdahl here, dviss.

He doesn't disagree with the other person's hope that it would happen, just says he doesn't expect it to. It's impossible to know for sure what Holdahl thinks/believes on this issue, though, just from those tweets.

Its horrible and I don't think we do enough for our homeless but at the same time I don't have a good idea on how to deal with the situation.

It's a systemic problem. Seattle has it just as bad as we do if not worse. And we are just the large cities. So the problem is actually visible. The heartland and the rural communities are getting the living shit kicked out of them. Where there were agricultural industries and families that lived around BLM land.... there are just people living below the poverty line around former store fronts that Wal-Mart just nuked. Nobody has any answers I think because poverty is such an unanswerable question.

The homeless isn't an all encompassing problem. There are several factors that come into play now that didn't use to.
Laziness, making a political stand, anarchists, etc

When I lived in New York. Homelessness was primarily made up of handicapped and mentally ill people.
This is not the case in portland.
Many many homeless here are simply teen runaways with zero work ethic.
It's hard to want to help those that aren't willing to work hard to help themselves.
I used to help those in need by giving handouts. No more. I'd rather donate to a local homeless shelter than give handouts to teens that could work but choose not to.
With that said I've never lived in a city that has as bad a homeless problem as Portland.
Again. I drive by johnsons creek everyday. Many homeless camps full of people who could be working for a living but prefer to hang out and ask for hand outs.
It's frustrating because these losers make it very difficult for the truly helpless to get help because of so many imposters.

There are approximately 400 million people in the United States,
Force our president to give each person a million dollars.
End welfare.
If you blow your million dollars and end up on he street, it's on you.

That would cost a cool $400 trillion. The US' total assets (minus the debt) are worth about $124 trillion ($280 trillion if you ignore the debt). The US' GDP is about $18 trillion.

The US can afford to do a lot, but not that.

Personally, I think a universal basic income is a pretty good idea that's getting some solid results in (admittedly limited) experiments.

What Would Happen If We Just Gave People Money?

Let me be clear. I did not mean the president give us government money. I meant he give it to us out of his own pocket. If he did that and we got rid of welfare and we legalized and taxed marijuana in all 5o states, we would be out of debt.

And I was being a bit synical. I know 95% of Americans would be broke in a week...

No human is worth even a significant fraction of $400 trillion. The wealthiest person in the world appears to be Bill Gates, and his net worth is $85.2 billion. That's far less than 1% of the money needed to do what you suggested (it's about 0.02% of the money needed).

Trump's net worth is believed to be around $3.5 billion. A small fraction of Bill Gates. ;)

I was being facetious. Obviously the math doesn't add up.
Wasn't meant to be serious. Lol
I shoulda used green font.
He is supposed to make America great again! Sorry. Didn't mean to go political. Was just joking because I'm a republican but can't stand our president...
He should have the answer and I say it's for him to give his money away. :)

Well, since every President has had homeless people since before the Great Depression, it is all of their faults....lol.

I would be in favor of a large increase in the EIC program; this rewards the working poor and has no bad side effects like increasing the minimum wage does. Warren Buffet also supports this idea.

Inflation would go up so high

People that wanted more would demand more for goods and services. The "admittedly limited" part should be the most admittedly important.

I've always said I could do all the work building a Ferrari if I had access to the facility where they make them. In the future with automatic everything you're probably going to have to make something you want on your own.

We treat the poor like shit in this country.

Fuck you casey! I hope you become homeless so you can garner perspective. I was homeless only for almost a week and FUCK ME it was the worst things that ever happened to me... Luckily I have good friends.

Good example would be the MarAzul. You want that boat in the future it may be hard to find anyone to build it for you. Or they may 3d print something close, who knows? I saw a 3d printed house that looks promising.

How do you know that Dviss doesn't have a thing for Casey and a homeless person fetish? Maybe he's just trying to combine the two for the ultimate experience.

Maybe the fuck you casey was an offer?

@dviss1 I'm not sure what Casey's point was, whether he was showing disgust for the homeless population around the Moda Center and Portland and sharing his doubt that the problem will get fixed because of the homeless people themselves, or if his ire and disgust are aimed at the problem itself and our local and federal governments Ill aim to fix it.

I too have been homeless and it sucks. While there are a lot of people who would prefer not to be there are also a large number who have accepted the life and want to be homeless. I think building more transitional housing for homeless people with better programs to help them get cleaned up, dental work, find jobs, homes and get back on their feet. I know there already some of these in portland, but they can only house a small fraction of the homeless population and the transitions programs are Ill funded.
A lot of the population is runaway teens and older seniors who are disabled or have hard time finding work because of their age and so find themselves slipping through the cracks with no safety net to catch them.
It's a multifauceted problem that involves getting runaway teens home,( or if their homes aren't safe, somewhere that is) the people that can still work cleaned up and back on their feet with jobs with time to save up so they can eventually get their own place, while getting older folks on retirement, Disability, or put together some other form of funding/pension for those that can't work to get them off the street. Then there is also the drug addiction issue. So, programs need to include helping those addicted get clean. It's a complex issue that needs a well out together solution. I know making homelessness illegal and putting people in jail and shooing them away or sending them away on buses to other cities is not the solution.
This issue angers me, I have seen it up close and personal. I have experienced it first hand. I know there is has not been enough done to fix it.
