Re: Cash for Clunkers- Clunked. Congress to Halt, $96 million already spent on progra

Does this only apply to new cars?

I wonder if dealers are slashing prices on higher end vehicles to fit into the 45K requirement. That would be sweet . . . get a 55K car dropped to 45K and then down to 40K with the program.

A 55K car for 40K! OK, probably not . . . but fun to think about.

Yeah unfortunately.

Re: Cash for Clunkers- Clunked. Congress to Halt, $96 million already spent on progra

right. too bad we're using it instead to help cut dependance on foreign oil and stimulate the dying auto industry in hopes of saving jobs. what a waste.

It is a waste. The auto industry already got their bailouts, now they need more? And as I said, the japanese cars are more efficient and desirable anyways. Stimulate the japanese corporations....yay!

yes only new cars and the $45k cap is based on fixed MSPR.

if it's any consolation you could get a 10k aveo for 5k though. new cars 50% off!! :ghoti:

If I had a clunker, I would probably look at a Korean car like a KIA or Hyundai......$4500 off and a 10 year warranty!

from experience i can tell you that you end up paying for that 10 year hyundai/kia warranty. to maintain it you're required to have the dealer do regular inspections at your expense. i'd rather have a 5 year warranty with no restrictions, which is standard with most everyone else.

what regular inspections? oil changes and scheduled maintenance?

scheduled maintenance with a bunch of stuff added. ends up being more expensive than routine maintenance, particularly if you don't live near a dealership.

what is "bunch of stuff added"?

I've never heard of that before. Most of my in-warranty repairs and the diagnosis were free.

new cars at full price are for rich people and suckers. when you add a $4500 discount on top of existing dealer incentives which are already at an all-time high right now it's a little different.
of course... $4500 about covers what a new car depreciates the moment you drive it off the lot.

btw... you know the ads saying "the banks/Wall Street got their bailout, where's mine?"... this was it

How much of our "dependence on foreign oil" is cut by 1/10 of 1% of cars in America getting a few more mpg? Is that a good use of 96M? Or, if we bump it up to the $3B number that I heard on the news this morning, 3% of cars in America getting an upgrade of a few more mpg is a good enough reduction of our "dependence on foreign oil" for 3B?

You know what else would cut "dependence on foreign oil?" Drilling our own up out of the ground.

Re: Cash for Clunkers- Clunked. Congress to Halt, $96 million already spent on progra

thank god we're not using that money for hospitals, fighting crime, schools or lowering our deficit. Johnny needs a new ride yo!

Its not like $3 billion would make a difference, might as well get more people into debt with new rides that THEY DESERVE. ITS THEIR GOD-GIVEN RIGHT!

A up to $4500 across the board tax cut (amount depending on what a household pays in taxes) makes much more sense and would stimulate the entire economy, not just some auto dealerships and automakers. It's funny that the Democrats bemoan tax cuts, yet the one program they've introduced that the public seems to like basically amounts to a tax cut for people who want to upgrade their vehicle/efficiency.

Why do you guys hate Mother Earth?

Re: Cash for Clunkers- Clunked. Congress to Halt, $96 million already spent on progra

Why not, instead of giving $4500 credits, we just have the government pay for people's cars if they get 30+mpg!

Since many people will take advantage of it (thus being a success) its a win-win!

might as well, we're playing with monopoly money, aren't we?

Re: Cash for Clunkers- Clunked. Congress to Halt, $96 million already spent on progra

As somebody who happens to like driving "clunkers", I really hate the government coming in and driving up the prices on them with this rebate. Every time they take a $4000 perfectly functional car off the road and wreck it, they make it a little harder for cheap (me) and poor people to buy transportation. That I have to pay taxes for the government to artificially drive up the price of clunkers eats me up even more.

Besides, I thought one of the basic principles of recycling and taking care of the earth is to use our resources wisely. How wise is it to just junk a vehicle which may still have several more years of life on it?

I'm one of the more liberal people on this board, but I think the entire premise is asinine.

I'd go so far as to say it's absolutely immoral.

There are all sorts of charities out there that basically give old but functional cars to people who need them. And there's the option of sending them off to any number of countries in the world where the average person doesn't have a car and would be tickled shitless to be poor in the USA, which really means you've got a car, house, and enough to eat, vs. poor where they're at, which means they're well and truly fucked and hungry.

And the economics of it are completely preposterous.

My wife and I were laughing about this last night. Why not just pay for everybody's vehicle with tax dollars! With $4500 being such a "success", imagine what $45k would do for auto sales!

Hand out money like Santa hands out candy canes. Everybody wins!

“We’re going to go bankrupt as a nation,” Biden said.

“Now, people when I say that look at me and say, ‘What are you talking about, Joe? You’re telling me we have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?’” Biden said. “The answer is yes, that's what I’m telling you.”

Doesn't everybody spend money to keep from going bankrupt? No need to worry with an economic wizard like Biden in the 2nd chair.

Re: Cash for Clunkers- Clunked. Congress to Halt, $96 million already spent on progra

Are you fucking kidding me?! I was going to do this tonight or tomorrow!! Fuck! Maybe that is a sign I shouldn't do it.
