CEASER CHAVEZ BLVD?!?!

But it has nothing to do with our local history. It's the same thing as celebrating Cinco De Mayo.... why do we do it? It's the Mexican Independence day.... Does any other country celebrate the 4th of July? It has nothing to do with our national history. Why don't we celebrate the Canadian independence day? It's on July 1st.

I would rather we spend more time recognizing the work of our forefathers than someone who had little to no effect on the city of Portland. For example, why was MLK day recognized as a day off from school and work, but not Presidents day? King was a GREAT man, but his work does not outweigh the work of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, etc. I just think our priorities are skewed. Politicians today are worried about aesthetics and political correctness.

Presidents day is a day off. It is honored because Oregon is historically, and some might argue still is, a very racist state. You cannot deny the history of racism here. It is a peace offering to minorities that we are ashamed of our VERY recent bad history.

I had heard this year that they had to choose between MLK day and Presidents Day and they chose MLK.

Yes, but we are talking about Portland here :)

Oregon was not a Spanish territory. Oregon does not have Spanish or Mexican heritage. If anything we should be celebrating some form of American Indian holiday

hispanic population in Portland is 8.5%
the state is 9.3% and had 30% growth from 2000 to 2005. What surprises me, is that there is not asian named streets.:dunno:

Sure, but I don't see more inclusiveness of other cultures as a bad thing. I don't think it harms anyone and I think it's positive for some number of people. Oregon may never have been connected to Mexico, but I'm sure there's a significant number of people in Oregon with Mexican ancestry. And others who are simply enriched by being exposed to other cultures.

Naito Parkway (formerly known as Front Ave.) was named after the late Japanese American businessman and Portlander Bill Naito.

It's dumb. It has nothing to do with Portland. Just another waste of time by our politicians.

I don't really have an issue with it other than the $85,000 expense I heard referenced at one point. The groups petitioning for renaming should definitely be forced to cover the funding.

This is what our city has become. A bunch of fucking transplants.

Yes, that's what happens everywhere... by the way your family are "transplants", too. If you don't like where you live then move.

That might have been someone moving from oregon to california.:dunno:

Once again Ed drops madd knowledge. Sept 16 is Mexico's independence day. Cinco de Mayo started as a celebration of a victory over France back in the 1800's and slowly became simply a celebration of the Mexican culture in general. I just don't believe they should force recognition on a people who have no ties with it. I guess it's no different then people of Nebraska, Wyoming or Alaska having an MLK street in one of their towns.

Who forces Cinco de Mayo on anyone?

Mandatory celebrations are unknown to me.

Cinco de Mayo is like most non-American holidays here, an excuse for drunks to get really, really drunk. Nobody else even notices it.

Most Americans couldn't even tell you what date of what month it's on. :drumroll:

I walk around on Cinco De Mayo kicking the ass of anyone I see that isn't celebrating...and I'm not even Mexican. Celebrate BIATCHES!!!!

I guess no one cares about the 86k or so (iirc) that was used to replace fully functional street signs? Or is that a small price to pay for homage to Senor Chavez?

But our schools are broke..... how did we come up with 86k for street signs?

Then I want a street named after me. I've done more for this city than Cesar Chavez.

Starbucks should then consider opening a store on the corner of NateBishop & PapaG.

Would that be out at clackamas, where jr high girls hang out? ;)

When unions for gov't employees and corporations can spend over 10 million on a campaign . . . 86K really isn't that much when talking about a gov't budget, IMO.
