This thread isn't meant to be a 'poor-is-me' type but with the West very strong this year and our team just got a lot weaker and piling injuries, missing the playoffs is a very real possibility. Here are some Center prospects worth looking at:

COLE ALDRICH
ca1.jpg

7'0" 250 lbs C
.
Smooth bigman with great length and developing skills who has quickly become the premiere center in the country ... Shows solid basketball understanding/fundamentals and a high motor ... Made a huge jump during his sophomore season (going from a 3ppg 3 rpg player to 15 ppg and 11 rpg) and appears ready to take his game to another level in his junior season ... His long arms (7'4 wingspan) allows him to play a few inches bigger than his 6'11 height and patrol the paint ... Has good agility for a player his size and is beginning to develop good body control and offensive moves ... His overall feel for the game has begun to come around. His footwork in the post is superb and his post game is starting to become highly efficient ... He employs an effective hook shot as well as the ability to step out and hit shots facing the basket ... But to his credit he is not overly enamored with drifting away from the basket and focuses on using his size, strength and touch to score easy baskets in the paint ... Though the mechanics on his shot aren't pretty, they are effective ... A bigman who runs the floor well and can finish on the break ... Shows excellent coordination with the ability to convert plays in both the half court and on the break ... Defensively he has become a real presence as a shot blocker using his huge wingspan to inhale close to 3 blocks per game ... He shows solid vision finding teammates when he gets doubled and does a good job of finding open teammates cutting to the basket ... Soft hands give him the ability to gather rebounds or post passes and limit any fumbling of the ball ... Developed very good consistency in his sophomore year scoring in double figures in all but 4 games, and at least 8 points in every game ... Highly efficient offensively, shooting close to 60% from the floor ... His free throw shooting has shown improvement (68% to 79%) and become very effective ... Very solid in most areas ... Appears to be all 6'11 that he's listed and could even potentially measure that barefoot making him a legit 7-footer

DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS
dmotiejunas06.jpg

7'1" 230 lbs. PF/C
.
Versatile lefty bigman with a high ceiling ... Has a lot of potential due to his size, agility and offensive development ... A finesse 4-man with excellent versatility, but shows the toughness to play inside with contact ... Shows a strong ability to run the floor and change directions, start and stop ... Has great legs (strong) and feet (quick) ... Has inside/outside ability with the ability to defend inside and play with his back to the basket, as well as knock down shots on the perimeter ... His outside shot has both range and consistency, and he has begun to develop some excellent moves including a jump hook, a turnaround fadeaway as well as fakes to draw opponents off their feet and excellent footwork ... Shows a competitive fire. He has a strong desire to win and improve, he just needs to show that at all times ... Gets off the floor quickly and has solid explosiveness ... A solid shot blocker ... Comfortable handling the ball when necessary to break the press and has solid vision and passing ability ... Has a very good body and appears that he will be able to add upperbody strength and become a solid rebounder and interior post player at the NBA leve

JOEL FREELAND
joel-freeland-grancanaria.jpg

6'11" 258 lbs PF/C
.
Joel Freeland’s (#7 on rights held ranking) scouting report was just updated back in November, and there isn’t a great deal to add to that besides saying that he’s continued to play well. He’s playing solid minutes in the ACB and continues to score efficiently and pull down plenty of rebounds, particularly on the offensive end. The fact that he ranks 6th in the league in PER while being amongst the league leaders in a host of other categories is obviously no joke considering that he just turned 22.

In the one game we saw in Madrid he did a good job putting his athleticism on display, going after rebounds on both ends, chasing blocks and generally being very active. Offensively, he looked somewhat tentative, not being much of a presence for Gran Canaria, which is not a huge surprise considering his limitations on this end of the floor. He’s mostly a finisher at this point (albeit a very good one at that) and seems to struggle when asked to do much more than that, as he lacks great footwork or much range on his jumper. He’s also somewhat foul prone and clearly not very experienced, averaging a high amount of turnovers relative to his role.

Although it’s pretty clear that that Freeland is not ready to contribute in the NBA, it seems like this summer will be the time for Portland to bring him over if they indeed intend on getting him in a Blazers uniform. He has an NBA escape clause and is drawing major interest around Europe from some of the top teams around, for example Real Madrid, Barcelona and Fortitudo Bologna, who all appear to have interest. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Gran Canaria decide to cash in and sell his rights at some point, which would likely make Freeland’s spot on the NBA rookie scale (around $800k gross) look paltry relative to the new contract he’d receive

Don't expect Coles number to blow you away this year, maybe minus Blocks. I say this because Marcus Morris, Xaiver Henry and Sherron Collins will all take points and rebounds from him. Since I am a KU fan, if you do have any questions about Cole, Id be willing to answer them.

Is Joel Przybilla with a more polished offensive game a decent comparison?

Getting Aldrich would be a disaster for the broadcasters. A frontcourt of Aldrich and Aldridge?

I think it would be just a MASSIVE disaster for Rice. Lord help him if we landed Cole.

Lord help Cole Aldrich if we drafted him. Unless the Blazers are able to appease the angry spirits in that indian burial ground buried under the arena.

Cole will probably be a better defender than Joel but offensively no doubt better. The fact he can hit free throws changes the ways you would play him.

So, I hate comparing him to just white players, but he sounds like another KU big: Raef LaFrentz

Cole will probably go in the lottery. I think it's safe to say the Blazers won't be THAT bad.

Na, Raef was like a 7 foot SG, Cole is a pure big man who has great timing for blocking shots, can hit the jumper if needed but knows his role. Cole can has been turnover prone early this year, but that was getting used to Xavier, who will be a 1st round pick himself.

Cole could go top 5, maybe top 3. It depends on his tournament play. Remember he had a triple double versus Dayton in the second round of last years tournament. He averaged 17.7 points, 15.7 rebounds and 5.3 blocks, 3 double doubles and the triple double in the 3 tournament games.

DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS is as much a "center" as Andrea Bargnani is. Drafting him would require a complete philosophical change, permanently moving Aldridge to the 5 and getting out-rebounded every night. No thanks.

Are we really talking about center prospects as if Greg's career is over? Or is this more due to Przybilla being a FA at the end of the year?

A little bit of both.

I honestly don't think we can view Greg as a cornerstone long-term. Maybe if he can stay healthy for a long period of time but he just has the worst luck.

I don't think it's a bad idea to look at potential long-term Center prospects other than Greg.

I think that's a fair question at this point.

I don't know what the Blazers are going to do going forward, but the most obvious thing seems to be acquiring some kind of back to the basket low post scorer who can play defense, either as a 4 or a 5. Maybe that's Joel Freeland starting next year, maybe that means they try to trade for a more veteran 4/5, or maybe it means they just try to find a worthy successor to Joel Pryzbilla; a player who can set mean picks, rebound, and block shots and they try to mold LaMarcus into more of a back to the basket or mid-post guy like there were doing last year.

Either way I think it's pretty clear that they are going to need some more firepower up front and at least one more go to scorer to either play alongside or behind LaMarcus.

Pittman's main problem could be his weight. He seems to fluctuate alot.

Yeah, i noticed on his write up it said he had lost like 70 pounds since going to Texas.

Hollinger pretty much sums up my feelings:

More on that in a minute, but first let’s get to the main story. Yes, we can officially say Greg Oden is injury-prone. By the end of this year, Oden will have played 82 of a possible 246 games since Portland took him with the first overall pick in 2007. While broken bones are rarely career-altering, this injury is franchise-altering in the sense that it seems a pipe dream for the Blazers to count on Oden going forward. They can take his contributions as gravy if he’s healthy, but they can’t build a team around him.

Larry Sanders
PH2009030903137.jpg

6'10" 220 lbs. 7'7" wingspan

Post player with tremendous defensive upside due to his unbelievable length: has a 7-foot-7 wingspan (His arms need their own insurance policy) plus good timing and explosiveness ... Already a bigtime shot blocker and is on his way to becoming an absolutely dominant one. As a freshman he averages just 16 minutes per game but is already tied for 10th in the country in blocked shots at 3.0 per game. His block per minute average is the best in the country ... Very fluid and fast running the floor. Shows a solid motor, hustling the floor and fighting for rebounds ... Has excellent foot speed and lateral quickness for a bigman ... His offensive game, while raw shows potential to develop ... Has a huge frame and should be able to put on plenty of weight without affecting his mobility ... Shows a solid shooting form with a high release. Just needs time to polish

According to Draftexpress, KP was in attendance tonight watching Greg Monroe.

Greg Monroe

6'11" 245 Lbs. PF/C

An intriguing player due to his versatility and size. Has an unusual set of skills … Very unselfish and displays tremendous passing ability … Monroe has excellent height and length allowing him to grab boards, block shots and score easy baskets on smaller players … Lefty who excels at facing the basket and using the dribble (which has been the trademark of his game since his sophomore year in high school) … Runs the floor very well for a player his size … High character guy who works hard to improve, also plays with good energy … Solid free throw shooting motion and touch on his shot … Has shot blocking potential due to his length but must become better disciplined, not leaving his feet … Shows a good understanding of positioning himself and boxing out on rebounds … Has good hands to catch and secure the ball

I've kept a close on a few prospects this season and I gotta say Aldrich is living up to the hype.

Defensively he'll be at least as good as Przybilla. Think Brook Lopez with Joel's defense. He also sets monster picks.

so we are rebuilding?
most every team is in a constant state of rebuilding.

hope for the best/prepare for the worst but always do your very best in the moment regardless of the circumstances

STOMP

Demarcus Cousins or bust. Best center out of that conference since Shaq IMO. Great rebounder. Great footwork. Nice touch. Agressive. Is kind of a dickhead, and I like that in a player.

Too bad for us that he's going in the top five.
