Director of Scouting Chad Buchanan tells Blazers.com that long-term team needs include a point guard, an elite wing and a big man.

So obviously they dont think Batum is that elite wing man...

What do you get out of this? I didn't read the article, but if he said we need an elite wing, then how can you think anything other than they don't Batum is that guy?

Seems like Batum will need to traded if they want to fulfill that wish list. I think they are just waiting until the deadline to drive his value up at this point.

Not exactly earth-shattering. Those are basic needs for any team.

Does someone have a link for the article? I can't seem to locate it on the site

im sure hcp thought HA was the center of future and firing nash was stupid.

Thanks. I can't get Twitter at work.

So let's see. Somehow we need to move Andre Miller, Batum, Rudy and 1 of our picks in the Melo trade to NJ and end up with harris and Favors. Then lose our ass this season and draft Harrison Barnes, Perry Jones or Terrence Jones

Harris
Matthews
Barnes
Favors
Aldridge

I don't think this is a dis on Batum . . . jsut the opposite. He says they need a PG (not elite) and a big man (not elite), but when it comes to the wing position, because they have Batum they would need an "elite" wing to improve in that position. :D

That sounds like the long and short of it.

i think the blazers goal is to get harris and keep batum.

they arent getting harris and favors. thats not gonna happen.

and i think its looking like blazers want to make the playoffs which means pryz will likely be traded.

I think Favors most likely heads to Denver in a 3-way deal. Maybe the Blazers could land Nene if they got really creative and were willing to move Camby as well.

That team would probably be pretty damn good in a year or two. Provided they get some bench to back it up. Once you got that in place, I would look for 3 versatile guys to share the bench minutes so that you have a tight rotation with everybody happy with their minutes. I don't want a team that is 12 deep of backups again. All that gained us is 12 guys deep of bitching. I want a solid starting 5 with 3 versatile guys who split the backup minutes between positons. One PF/C type. One SG/SF type. One good combo guard. Then just let them play together and get some chemistry. Some of those spots might already be able to be filled by players here, but you would have to sort that out by how it shook out after a trade.

When he says the Blazers need an elite wing player, it could be at either the 2 or 3 spot. While Mathews and Batum are both good players, I don't think either of them would be considered "elite" at this point in their careers. With Brandon in the improbable category for being the elite wing again, I'd say Buchanan is on the mark.

What's wrong with this thread? I don't follow many people on Twitter, and I would have missed this if MIXUM hadn't posted it.

Ed O.

Derrick Favors would be on top of my wish list as far as bigs go. He has the type of game that would complement LaMarcus.

Ya, my thinking is that Denver is enamoured by Batum, and maybe with him and a pick we could get Favors in the deal

I tlike the idea of getting Harris and Favors for what MM described. And I think it s a possibilty. If NJ wants Melo, they are going to have to give up something of value to get him.

Batum, Rudy, LA are all good "HAPPY GO LUCKY GUYS!" They need some nasty in them. It looks like LA is starting to find some swagger and if Batum can.... he'll be the player we need! The difference between Batum and Pippen is Scotty had some evil in him.... Batum needs to find that and the sky is the limit for his talent! The deer in the headlights he presents, needs to vanish!

It took Scottie a while to find that nasty, for sure.

Jeesus:

PG
Elite Wing
Big Man

That is practically an entire team and EVERY NBA team wants these 3 things so the competition is fierce.

I know we all know all of this, but to hear our scout put it out there in plain language like that stings a little.

It seems not so long ago that we had 2 of those three locked up and more than enough assets to wrangle for the 3rd (a PGOTF).

Maybe hanging around Wesley will drill that into him. Nic sorta idolizes Brandon, and Roy is a fairly stoic player. With Wesley replacing BRoy for the time being, I hope we see a change in Nic's personality on the floor.

Like a few of us said early in the season. Portland is closer to rebuilding than competing for a title. We of course got killed for it, so I guess Chad should expect angry emails from homer fans

A few of you, early in the season, before it was known that Greg would need microfracture surgery and that Brandon's knees would suddenly age 10 years, said that Portland was closer to rebuilding than competing for a title. You were full of crap at that time, but unfortunate events may have turned you into soothsayers.

Or maybe some folks were just honest about how high the risk factor was. Once word came out that Joel was likely to be back before Oden - despite being 3 months behind Oden in his rehab - predicting bad things for Oden was an easy call.
