Two days ago it looked like Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard, armed with Raef LaFrentz's expiring contract, would be the focal point of the trade deadline. However, as of Wednesday afternoon it is still unclear what, if anything, the Blazers are going to do.

Sources say the Bobcats turned down a Blazers offer for Gerald Wallace Wednesday afternoon. Sources also say the Vince Carter-to-the-Blazers talk has cooled considerably.

If Wallace is out and the Blazers are cooling to Carter, that puts the most likely Blazers trade scenario with Milwaukee for Richard Jefferson. The teams have previously discussed swapping Jefferson and Luke Ridnour for LaFrentz and Travis Outlaw.

While there has been significant chatter around the league Wednesday afternoon that Portland was closing in on a deal for Jefferson, sources from both teams insist that it isn't true. In fact, a Bucks source told ESPN.com that Milwaukee hasn't heard from the Blazers in a while.

Another source conceded on Wednesday afternoon that there's now a chance the Blazers might not do anything before the trade deadline. Instead they would take the savings from LaFrentz's contract and try to make a deal in free agency this summer. While the Blazers won't be flush with cash, they should have somewhere between $7-9 million in room depending on where the cap comes in.

Sounds like bullshit. I think this is KP playing hard to get. Ignore them so they'll gain more interest. The fact that Milwaukee hasn't heard from us in a while, Carter talks have cooled, etc etc, I think KP is pulling back and circulating this "now we're probably just going to wait until the summer." I would expect the deal, if there is one, to happen tomorrow. 11th hour.

I will be unhapy if we don't make a trade before the deadline, but that's mostly because I'm unconvinced that we'll be able to do much with the cap space we will have in the offseason.
 
This would be really dissapointing.

I had high hopes that Raef + some young talent would land us a stud SF.

I just can't see us making a splash in FA - we NEVER DO!!! EVER!!

Bummer, but I have to admit I kind of expected it. We've never had very good luck with the "trading expirings for talent" thing. I remember Van Excel, and others . . . never went anywhere. I guess it's not hard too understand. Even if tough economic times, it's tought to trade an All Star away just to save money. It's bad for team moral, attendance . . . not to mention you generally end up losing more games.

I guess I thought this year would be different b/c of the economy.
 
7 to 9 million in cap space won't get us an impact player, even if one was available via free agency.

Due to Miles contract still counting against portland, if KP doesn't use RLEC now it will be wasted.
 
This summer's FA class stinks! We need to make a deal now. We won't even have enough cap space to offer a deal to Hedo in the summer. We'll have to overpay a role player like Brandon Bass. No thanks.
 
I don't want to be a negative nelly, either, but the RLEC value DOES go down this summer... I agree.

Especially with talk that the salary cap might go down. That means that our SAMLE (space above mid-level exception) goes down markedly.

Our cap space might get us an Andre Miller, which wouldn't be bad, but I was really hoping for an impact player and I don't think that would happen this summer.

It doesn't have to be a "splash" (as in, an elite free agent) for it to be impactful. Adding a Josh Childress or Ramon Sessions would be pretty nice.
 
After thinking about this I think KP is pulling Chad Ford and I'm pretty sure we are making a trade now. I think KP is acting like we will use the cap space this summer to get some team(s) to up their offer. Just my opinion but watch and wait we will make a trade by tomorrow morning. Maybe RJ but I'm still hoping for Butler or Wallace. I'm not a big Deng fan and I sort of hope we don't trade for him. I also world rather have Butler, Wallace or RJ before VC and I just don't think KP really wants VC.

I still think it's going to be for Vince or Wallace. Everyone got excited once the one deal went down and now that its been quiet for a few hours we are kinda worrying. I think we'll be fine, and so far KP's track record gives me reassurance.

It is ass.
 
Does anyone know the trade that the Bobcats declined (according to Chad Ford) BTW? It says we offered something this afternoon. Part of me wonders if we offered something prior to the Ruffin deal and Charlotte asked for more, so maybe Ruffin is a way for us to up the ante in our deal for Wallace?
