A season preview? So this crap we've been watching at times isn't part of the season. THANK GOD.

The professor will raise our IQs in basketball defense and what BWW stands for!

This needs to be broadcast. Or at least put on Facebook Live. A few frustrated fans could make this fascinating.

Disconcerting: Terry says he "doesn't know IF and when Festus will come back."

If?

If??

Neil?

Why is defense so bad this year compared to last?

Terry:
1. We had health last year.
2. I don't know. If we knew, we'd already be doing it.
3. We were 26th in Jan last year, and then we picked it up. My only HOPE is that we get better as we go along. Right now it's abysmal.
4. I don't have any problem with the effort. We make mistakes. Defense is a skill, it comes with experience. It's as much mental as physical. I see a bunch of young guys running around, trying hard, but not smart. We are frozen and brain-locking and late-reacting.
5. The best defensive teams KNOW what they're doing.

Defense against Harden:

We had a bunch of different looks against him, switching, trapping, etc, etc, and nothing worked. Switching is irritating for fans, but that was by plan. It forces guys to play one on one rather than shooting threes (oops). We were trying to get him to not catch the ball at his sweet spots.

Talking about Love:

That was the best quarter I've seen live. Only two of his shots were open in the first quarter.

These are really unsatisfactory answers. Dude, come on.

What the heck does that mean?

I wish someone had asked him why he waited until yesterday to devote a full practice to defense?

This 25 second video disagrees:

I only see one of the eight where Love isn't wide open with his feet set and his shoulders squared as he releases the shot with a defender lunging at him from six to eight feet away. In the one where the defender is within six feet, he doesn't get a hand up.

Maybe that's the problem. If he doesn't consider those open shots, then it's no wonder we're dead last in defense. If he can honestly watch that video and praise his players for their good defense on six of those eight shots, we're seriously fucked.

Maybe Stotts considers a "contest" lazily jogging towards a player with a hand half in the air. It may show up as a contested shot on Synergy Sports or something, but it sure isn't a contest by an y good NBA standards...

Perhaps a defender was within 3 feet of Kevin Love at the time of release on those eight 3-pointers, but there isn't one example of a defender being in position to block or alter Love's shot. In every case, Love had time to catch the ball, set his feet and get the shot off without a hand in his face (or his area code).

With all the talk I am hearing from Stotts and Dame that it's not the system and it's not a lack of effort that is the problem on defense, about how guys are making mistakes and a lack of communication, I would think the staff and players would be breaking down a LOT of film - especially that 1st quarter against CLE and the entire game against HOU. If Stotts can watch the film of the 1st quarter against CLE and honestly say Kevin Love was well defended on 6 of those 8 made 3-pointers, he truly is delusional.

Honestly, just shouting, "Hey, miss it!" at Love would have probably been more effective than a defender desperately lunging in Love's direction with no chance to alter or block the shot.

No kidding.

Love was WIDE OPEN.

It was like shooting warm ups before the game. Even Bones Jones could make those. ;)

Yep, and I'd have to go back and watch the rest of the 1st quarter, but I also seem to recall Love was wide open on the two 3-pointers he missed in that quarter. They were all catch and shoot 3-pointers with his feet set and plenty of time to get the shot off.
