Frye Creating Mismatches In Phoenix
Arizona Republic - 09/16 - 4:38 PM ESTPaul Coro of the Arizona Republic writes that Suns big man Channing Frye could create offensive mismatches this season.

The team has been taking part in voluntary workouts and traditional centers have had a hard time defending Frye, according to Coro.

If defenders leave Frye open on the perimeter, he's comfortable hitting a jumper. In addition, if defenders rush out to pressure him, he has the explosiveness to blow by them.
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm .... what?

Hey, he was playing great at this time last year too, til he got hurt. I think Channing's game will really blossom in PHX's system.

I love Channing Frye, Im even a huge Arizona Wildcats fan but Channing was never explosive. I agree that he will do well with them though and then there will be a ton of people bitchin about how we never should have let him go.

While I never will think of him as explosive... He isnt as bad as some think. I do admit once though, when my 14 year old brother asked who the worst player in the NBA was, I said Frye :)

I think we're going to miss him this year. I wish we would have kept him. He's a bargain at the price he signed for. I wish him nothing but the best in Phoenix.

He wouldn't have found minutes here outside of injury time.

If we had signed Frye, we wouldn't have had the cap space to sign Miller, so I think it was a good trade.

I'm not so sure we're going to miss him on the court, but we'll miss him off the court and I agree - I hope nothing but the best for him. So likable. Very genuine. I'll follow his career for as long as it lasts.

I'm going to make a bold prediction and say that Channing will be back in Portland at some point to take over one of the broadcaster roles.

I could actually see thought. Nice point.

Yep. Wouldn't surprise me at all. I was going to end my post with "I hope he ends up back in Portland after his career is over." But I didn't even think as a broadcaster or affiliated with the Blazers. That would be pretty sweet.

Channing was and is a much better player than most the kids around here gave him credit for. If given a chance to play consistent minutes, he'll be a good player and make us rue the day we diss'd him.

How did we diss him?

Webster and Oden are lookin' great in practice too... doesnt' mean a thing though. Every team is a title contender this time of year.

actually Memphis' players are already bickering about shots.

Hopefully he'll come back and take YOUR role!

What they really mean is Frye will cause a mismatch because he provides no offense.

Although, I could see him flourishing in Phoenix, where he can shoot freely and often without worrying about the ramifications of missing.

He's a lousy player: a tall shooting guard who can't shoot very well offensively and a marshmallow defensively.

It makes perfect sense that he'd look good in the offseason, when intensity and defense are much lower than the regular NBA season.

I know you don't like Frye as a player, but I think you overstate your case against him.

Yes, last season's performance from Frye was a big disappointment - especially after the way he finished the 07-08 season (16.2 PPG, 10.2 RPG on 0.661 FG% over the last five games as a starter).

In four seasons in the NBA, Frye has had two productive seasons (his rookie year with an outstanding PER of 18.1 - same rookie PER as Greg Oden and a full point higher than LaMarcus Aldridge's rookie PER, and his 1st year in Portland with a PER of 14.8 - 4th highest on the team and quite solid for a bench player). He's also had two awful seasons, his second season in NY and last season in Portland - in both of those seasons he was coming off an injury. His first season in Portland, he had the second highest TRB% on the team behind only Joel, and in spite of the two awful seasons, he still has a higher career TRB% than LaMarcus Aldridge. Frye also has an identical career DRtg (108) to Aldridge) and is a better FT shooter.

I'm not saying Frye is as good as Aldridge (not even close), but when healthy and given consistent minutes, he can be a productive player. He had a lousy season last year, but given he's also had two productive seasons, I'm not ready to label him a lousy player. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how he looks during the regular season this year. I don't think he'll have a monster season, but I do expect his PER to return to the 14 - 15 range that it was his 1st year in Portland. Which for an inexpensive, back-up big man, is more than acceptable (and far from lousy). If he's anywhere close to a 15 PER in significant minutes, he'll be a steal at what Phoenix is paying him (less than 35% of the league average salary).
