Charles Barkley speaks about his ‘Inside the NBA’ future, blasts cancel culture: ‘Can’t have fun nowadays’

Charles Barkley has often said he didn't expect to be on the award-winning "Inside the NBA" for this long.

Barkley has been a part of the show since 2000, and has won four Sports Emmy Awards for Outstanding Studio Analyst.

But the 58-year-old Naismith Hall of Famer has some thoughts of when he will say goodbye to his television gig.

”I’m trying to hang on for another couple of years until I’m 60 and then they can kiss my ass. I’m only working until 60," Barkley told WJFK 106.7 The Fan in Washington earlier this week.I’ve already told them that. I’m not working until the day I die. That’s just stupid. And if I don’t have enough money by now, I’m an idiot, anyway. They should fire me, anyway."

Barkley says he blames the current stigma of "cancel culture" where past behavior or comments can land you in hot water.

“If you crack a joke the wrong way, they’re like, ‘Oh, no, no, no, you crossed the line,’” Barkley said. “I mean, they won’t even let me talk about San Antonio anymore when I’m always talking about their big ole women down in San Antonio. They’re like, ‘Charles, we got one lady (who) wrote an article.’ I’m like, ‘First of all, I didn’t call anybody personally fat in San Antonio; I was just joking around.’

His bosses at Turner Sports have talked to him frequently about taking jokes too far.

“That’s all we ever talk about behind the scenes like, ‘Yo, man, be careful going in this direction.’ I’m like, ‘Yo, man, we can’t even have fun anymore." Barkley said.

This reads like it was written by an 8th grader... Is this really what 'journalism' has devolved to?

"My employer shouldn't have any say about how I do my work".

Yeah, good luck with that.

I don’t recall where he said that….but okay?

Isn't that exactly what he's complaining about?

Barkley has had a career of being irreverent and irrepressible. Everything is different now. Notwithstanding, SNL being an exception to that rule.

Yeah, go forbid we grow as people and realize insulting others isn't super cool.

By golly, we just can't talk the way we used to, back in the day when we could make fun of all the marginalized individuals and they had to shut up and take it. The good ol' days.

Can't wait until all of this infiltrates itself into Army boot camp.

The pendulum can swing too far in either direction.

It already has! Did you know they even let NEGROES and WOMEN and GAYS in now?

I certainly hope all that has passed your highly scrutinizing approval. Jury's out, though, I suppose.

Sorry. Not making the connection.

Sorry. Not making the connection.

His employer is telling him not to make fat woman jokes.

He's not being "cancelled". His employer is telling him how they want him to do his job.

Sounds like his job description changed.

Barkley is wrong. Atlanta takes the cake for fatties, not San Antonio. Everyone in Atlanta is 80 pounds overweight. CNN is based in Atlanta, so they subscribe to cancel culture.

Barkley has earned the right to call out Atlanta fatties because he's only 70 pounds overweight. But his employer is right to defend the good name of San Antonio.

Just wanted to clarify the thread.

Sounds like Charles is crossing the line on and off the air.

Hey, hold on there, I was born in Atlanta. The South in general has a lot of overweight people, not just Atlanta.
I had an ambulance driver this morning tell me that he couldn't wait to get out of Houston and into Portland Oregon for a few reasons:
Too many fat people;
Everything was gray because there was concrete everywhere and nothing green;
Way too hot;
Too many power outages.
All I can say is Aldridge deserves to live in Houston.

but wait. You dont hold this stance in here. Remember telling me that some people here who was going around insulting others was just a joke. Remember?

So which is it? Its okay to go into forums and make insulting jokes, but not on tv?

is that the line? Forums are okay but tv is off limits? How about podcasts?

just trying to figure out where these goal posts are that keep changing since you so adamantly defended someone who would continue to insult others who asked him to stop in this forum.
Im just trying to understand because obviously ive failed in the past…

sure seems like a very double standard stance compared to past comments.
Maybe im missing something? I do miss alot….

Charles Barkley is the one and only Charles Barkley. He says what he needs to.

Life just isn't worth living if you can't insult women.

That's one of the things I never do except when my wife is with me, we're driving somewhere and have a problem with a woman driver. She just waits for some man to do something stupid when driving near us and says something derogatory about men drivers and thus I am taught a repeated lesson. Of course, this just reinforces her opinion that I never learn also that I never listen to her. My only way out is the expression that every newly wedded man must learn and learn quickly, "Yes, dear."

If anything I have said insults Christians I would be interested to hear what it is. And I would apologize in that case.

Criticism is not insult. And I never killed anyone who didn't share my atheist views.
Anyone want to ridicule my atheism I will respond. With words.

You claimed that Charles said that his employer shouldn’t have any say over how he does his work. He did not. Your claim is without merit.
