Cheap Big Men Left?

Seeing as how Traylor isn't joining us next season, we still have our 1.6 million left from the mid-level to sign a cheap big man with. Here are some guys we could probably get that are left out there(stats are career stats per 40 minutes):

Daniel Santiago, Unrestricted Center, 29 years old, 11.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.02 blocks PER: Not too good a player or a force on defense, but could give us height(7'1") inside. He could be used as a 10-15 minute backup for Krstic and give us around 3.5 points and 2-3 rebounds.

Michael Stewart, Unrestricted Center, 30 years old, 7.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.1 blocks PER: Could be used as a rebounder. At 6'10", he's tall enough to be a center and can get us around 4 rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench. He's one of the best rebounders of the guys left and also one of the best defenders.

Wang Zhizhi, Unrestriced Center, 28 years old, 19 points, 7.3 rebounds, 0.8 blocks PER: Like Santiago: A tall, insurance backup center. He's not a great rebounder and he's soft, but is one of the best scorers in the bunch.

Malik Allen, Unrestricted Forward, 27 years old, 13.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.3 blocks PER: An insurance backup forward in case somebody gets hurt in the Cliff/JC/Marc Jackson rotation.

Calvin Booth, Unrestricted Center, 29 years old, 11.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.3 blocks PER: Booth is a hard nosed defender who brings defense and rebounding to the table. He's one of the select few players in the last 20 years who ever got 10 rebounds in a game, and he did it in less than 30 minutes! My favorite selection out of all the guys we can sign.

Predrag Drobnjak, Unrestricted Center, 29 years old, 14.8 points, 7 rebounds, .80 blocks PER: See Daniel Santiago and add some scoring

Andrew DeClerq, Unrestricted Center, 32 years old, 11.4 points, 9.9 rebounds, 1.1 blocks PER: A veteran scorer who can is a below average defender but can bring us around 3 and 3 to the table off the bench.

Marcus Fizer, Unrestricted Forward, 27 years old, 18.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, .38 blocks PER: A tweener big man who we have taken looks at in the past. He can be a scoring spark off the bench if we need it, and can rebound pretty well for his height.

Alan Henderson, Unrestricted Forward-Center, 32 years old, 15 points, 9.2 rebounds, .7 blocks PER: One of the biggest hustlers in the league, even at his age. He can be a big force on the boards. He's a tad undersized for a center, but can fit in well in the rotation.

Mikki Moore, Unrestricted Center, 29 years old, 13.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 1.47 blocks PER: Pretty much just an insurance big body. Had a very short stint with us in 03-04.

Rodney Rogers, Unrestricted Forward, 34 years old, 17.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, 0.79 blocks PER: We could bring Rodney back as an insurance scorer, as he doesn't really bring a lot more to the team than quick scoring.

Lee Nailon, Unrestricted Forward, 30 years old, 17.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, .20 blocks PER: Had a good season with New Orleans last season. Not much of a rebounder, though.

<u>Other Options</u>:

Tony Massenburg: Was a part of the Spurs team that won the 'ship last season.
Walter McCarty: A one dimnesional scorer that can be a spark off the bench.

Reggie Evans of course would be the best choice, but you some it all up with one word unlikely...so now I think we should take a look at a combo forward like Lee Nailon. I think it adds a little versatilty to the frontline...and he can produce some scoring out put. Alot of people dont believe that Nailon can be productive in a winning enviroment...but I disagree, I think he showed on the Hornets, when they where in Charlotte and playoff bound, that he can be productive. I think we can get a solid 10-15 minutes per game from him. I think he is the best forward available for what we have to offer...Malik Allen is gone I believe, Fizer is solid but he has a problem with his knee I believe that dates back to last offseason, I doubt he can pass this current Nets pshyical. And nobody else is really worth talking about in my opinion, maybe McCarty cause he can replace the frontcourt shooting, we lost in Scalabrine..but the rest of his game is very unimpressive.

I think that Calvin Booth is the best option. If your description of him is correct (and I agree with you) then he might be exacly what the Nets need. I think that the guy has a lot of skill, he was very unfortunate a few years back, suffering an ankle injury that required surgey and forcing him to miss all but 15 games of a season. I think that he actually has quite a lot to offer because no one has seen him really play. He only had one complete season (after the injury) where he was part of the regular rotation in Seattle.

The Nets might even be able to sign him for the league minimum. He is certainly worth it in my opinion.

I think the top three choices should be Evans, Booth and Henderson. Two other names not mentioned who might fit would be Tom Gugliotta or Christian Laettner.

Googs is not a good look for this Nets team...we need someone who can play 10-15 minutes on a regular basis, think about it...Collins is a bigman that will only give you 25 minutes per game, its been like that for years, he seems to tire easy and that is when the silly fouls start. You want to keep JC in that 25 minute area, to get his full effectiviness. Nenad had a hard time staying on the court last year, he tires fast as well, I think we can expect about 30 minutes a night from him. So that is appox. 55 minutes per night from our starting bigs between the PF/C(there is a total of 96 minutes to spread out between the two positions over a course of a full game)...which means have to find away to get about 40 more minutes...Marc Jackson can give us about 20 minutes(75 big man minutes gone per), who ever we sign should be able to play the majority of the rest of the minutes...and then Cliff Robinson take the less role. And be used as more of an insurance defensive bigman.

So in my opinion, guys like Googs, Micheal Stewart dont have enough left in the take for those type of roles. Alan Henderson, would be solid, but he is injury prone...Iam sure something would come up when the Nets docs take a serious look.

Laettner is not a good look for this team either in my opinion, spot up shooting bigman, doesnt really go inside on offense and doesnt bring anything to the table defensively. Booth can block shots and be a pressence to at least give penetrators something to think about...closet thing to a deterent since Zo left, so hmm why not. But at this point we are really reaching in the garbage in my opinion...he is not worth 1.6 million, so the Nets better sign him for the minimum and then give the 1.6 to either Devin Brown or DeMarr Johnson.

I actually think Laettner would be a nice fit for the team. He's not going to take over a game, but his basketball IQ makes up for his diminished athleticism and quickness.

Christian Laettner can get the Nets easy shots, second looks, and hit the open mid-range shot, or get to the FT line knock them down.

Laettner played some valuable minutes for the Heat last season. He set screens to free up Wade, EJ, and Damon Jones. He swung the ball around from the high post, and dumped pinpoint passes downlow to Shaq. I think he would fit right in with what the Nets like to do on offense, and make similar contributions for them.

I think Laettner can help a team, the problem is that his best asset is the mid-range jumper and free-ing up shooters with screens and floor spacing. Those are the things Collins does fairly well(mid-range shooting & setting screens), Krstic is a pick & pop bigman too. Adding Laettner imo, adds nothing different then what we already have at the big spots, Iam looking for a little vesatlty on the frontline.

Now, if we where to move JC in a trade for a guy like Gooden or Chandler(wishful thinking), then adding Laettner to round out the rotation of bigs, would be decent. But with the current crop of bigs adding him is just redundant in my opinion.

Looks like Tyson agreed to term with the Bulls. I think we sign someone for one year, probably Songalia, and try again next off-season.

The problem is that next years crop of bigs is even more of a slim picking...only bigs we have a legit shot at would be Gooden, Wilcox, and Nene. And you know every team in the league in need of bigman help will be looking to over pay those guys. That is something we cant afford to do with Kidd making 18 mill, Carter 15 mill & Jeff 11 mill....we close to capped out with those three guys alone. With out trading the big three, our bigman hopes for the next couple of years rest on the shoulders of the potential of Nenad Krstic and our two 1st round picks in next years draft. If any of those players dont pan out then we are pretty much stuck. A trade would be our only answer then really..but Kidd's value would be decreased...a year old & making close to 19 million, I doubt alot of teams would be interested. Trading Jefferson then would probably be our only option(something I personally never want to do), which without giving up to much at best would land us a Carlos Boozer....which makes little sense,we could have kept Martin, who is a more quality player...I rather have Kidd/Martin/Jefferson over Kidd/Carter /Boozer

Lets hope the LA Clippers really suck next year...and give us a high pick we can trade or a shot at Shelden Williams, LaMarcus Aldrige, or maybe even Josh Boone (though I'm not really high on his slender frame).

Na, I moved out of NJ last June, and his family moved to Charlotte sometime last year and he played for the Hornets and Philly.
